Camels shutout Old Dominion, 8-0
Campbell picked up its first shutout of the season behind six scoreless innings from Heath Bowers, blanking Old Dominion 8-0 Wednesday night at Jim Perry Stadium.
Campbell improves to 25-5 overall on the year, while ODU dips to 13-14. With the win, CU set a program record for combined wins in back-to-back seasons with 65, after winning 41 in 2012. The previous mark of 64 was held by the 2000 and 2001 Campbell squads.
Bowers, a sophomore righthander from Lillington, allowed two hits while striking out three and walking one in six frames, moving to 6-0 on the season. Logan Self, Coley Thompkins and Ryan Thompson struck out one batter apiece and combined to allow one hit. Three hits allowed in a game is a season-best for the Camels.
At the dish, Brent Graham, Blake Boyce, Trevor Lane and Clayton Brown all knocked in two runs each, with Brown posting a 3-for-4 night and adding a run scored. David Olson added a 2-for-3 effort at the plate with two runs scored for the Camels.
Campbell jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second, as Olson scored on Boyce’s double to right. Lane followed with a RBI single to center.
The Camels posted four runs in the bottom of the fourth with Boyce, Lane, Brown and Graham knocking in runs.
Graham and Brown notched RBI base hits in the sixth and seventh, respectively for Campbell.
ODU starter Jake Josephs was charged with the loss, falling to 3-2 on the season after allowing six runs on 10 hits in four innings.
Ben Verlander, P.J. Higgins and Brian Bashara recorded hits for the Monarchs in the loss.
The Camels return to Big South play on the road this weekend, heading to Presbyterian for a three game series Friday-Sunday in Clinton, S.C.
