ODU wins CUSA debut at ECU
GREENVILLE (AP) — Keenan Palmore scored 23 points on 11-of-13 shooting to lead Old Dominion to a grueling 81-70 win over East Carolina in its Conference USA debut Saturday night.
In a tight game that included four first half lead changes, Old Dominion (7-9, 1-0) broke free midway through the second half when Aaron Bacote pumped in eight unanswered points to fuel a 12-2 run for a 63-52 lead that the Monarchs protected to the buzzer.
Bacote contributed 18 points overall and Dimitri Batten added 12 for ODU, which shot 56 percent from field.
East Carolina (11-5, 0-1) kept the game close but hit just 22 of 55 from the field and couldn't stop the Monarchs in the second half.
Paris Roberts-Campbell led four Pirates in double-figures with 21 points and seven rebounds.
ODU is playing its first season in C-USA after leaving the Colonial Athletic Association.
Coastal Carolina 81, Gardner-Webb 69
BOILING SPRINGS (AP) — Elijah Wilson scored 21 points, including four 3-pointers, to lead Coastal Carolina to an 81-69 win over Gardner-Webb in a conference matchup Saturday night.
The Chanticleers (8-8, 1-1 Big South Conference) took control midway through the first half with a 14-3 run that included two Wilson 3-pointers and carried a 35-23 advantage into the break. Gardner-Webb (7-10, 0-2) kept pace with Coastal Carolina after the break, with both teams pumping in 46 second-half points, but the Runnin' Bulldogs couldn't erase the deficit.
Josh Cameron contributed 15 points, Uros Ljeskovic added 14, Badou Diagne had 12 and Warren Gillis 11 for Coastal Carolina, which hit 27 of 47 (57 percent) from the field and 7 of 12 from 3-point range.
The Runnin' Bulldogs got 16 points from Naji Hibbert, while Jerome Hill contributed 11 and Tyrell Nelson had 10.
Elon 74, The Citadel 65
ELON (AP) — Lucas Troutman scored 19 points and grabbed nine rebounds as Elon defeated The Citadel 74-65 on Saturday night.
Jack Isenbarger added 15 points and Sebastian Koch 14 for the Phoenix (9-8, 2-1 Southern), who defeated the Bulldogs (4-14, 0-3) for the sixth straight time.
Koch made all 14 of his points, including four 3-pointers, in the first half in leading Elon to a 36-29 advantage. The Phoenix extended the lead to 15 with 15:57 left. The Citadel was within seven points with 3:53 but Isenbarger scored five points and Troutman four in a 9-2 run that put Elon up 74-60 with 1:22 to go.
Elon committed only four turnovers while scoring 19 points off 11 Bulldogs miscues. The Phoenix also made 15 of 20 free-throw attempts to The Citadel's 6 of 9.
Matt Van Scyoc led four Bulldogs in double figures with 16 points. The Citadel has lost six straight.
Davidson 78, Appalachian St 66
DAVIDSON (AP) — De'Mon Brooks scored 13 of his 19 points in the second half as Davidson pulled away from Appalachian State for a 78-66 win Saturday night.
Tevin Baskin gave Appalachian State (4-12, 0-3 Southern Conference) a 36-35 lead 5 seconds into the second half, but Davidson used a 19-6 run to open up a 12 point lead with just over 14 minutes to play.
The Mountaineers rattled off six straight points to get within 54-48 with 12:09 remaining, but wouldn't get any closer and Davidson gradually extended its lead as high as 15 in the game's waning minutes.
The Wildcats (7-10, 3-0) shot 57 percent from the field and 55 percent from 3-point range while turning 15 Appalachian State turnovers into 18 points.
Jay Canty scored a season-high 23 points and grabbed eight rebounds in the loss.
Tyler Kalinoski scored 16 and Chris Czerapowicz added 15 for Davidson.
Florida A&M 63, North Carolina Central 60
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Reggie Lewis scored 19 points — including half of Florida A&M's final 16 points — to fuel a late rally and push the Rattlers into a 63-60 comeback over North Carolina Central on Saturday night.
Lewis hit a 3-pointer with 1:25 to play to put the Rattlers within one, 60-59. His assist to Jamie Adams for a 3 gave Florida A&M a two-point lead, and Lewis made a free throw to end the game.
Adams added 19 points, and he and Lewis combined for nine 3-pointers.
The Rattlers (5-11, 1-2 Mid-Eastern Athletic) had trailed from the start, but North Carolina Central allowed them back into the game and blew a 14-point lead after scoring just two points in the final 10:24. The Eagles (8-5, 0-1) missed 11 shots and turned the ball over four times in those final minutes.
Alfonzo Houston led North Carolina Central with 16 points.
