Lady Crusaders reach state soccer championship

Grace Christian 2, Statesville Christian 1
No. 3 Grace Christian (18-1-1) defeated No. 2 Statesville Christian (9-6) for the second time this season in the NCISAA 1A semifinals Friday night at Community Christian School in Wilson.
The Lady Crusaders beat Statesville Christian 4-1 in Sanford during the regular season.
Statesville stopped the top two Lady Crusader goal scorers from finding the net Friday night but sophomore forward Charity Taylor and freshman midfielder Bridgette Angeles tallied the goals to put Grace Christian into Saturday afternoon's state final; Grace Christian's first-ever NCISAA championship match.
Madison Bolen and Torie Boyte, the top Lady Crusader scorers, had one assist apiece.
Grace Christian played top-seeded Hickory Christian Saturday.


Union Pines 2, Hunt 1
The Lady Vikings (22-2-3) advanced to the third round of the NCHSAA 3A State Tournament Friday night in Cameron.
Hunt (13-8) scored in the first minute of the match. Sierra Gonzalez scored later in the half to bring the Lady Vikings level, then Sam Ring scored to make it 2-1 Lady Vikings in the second half.
No. 4-seeded Union Pines will host No. 5 Swansboro (18-4) in the round of 16 at 7 p.m. Wednesday.


Swansboro 4, Triton 1
Swansboro (18-4) got out to a 4-0 lead by halftime and advanced past visiting Triton (14-5-1) in the second round Friday night.
Junior Kimmie Moore scored two goals and Swansboro had a 14-2 advantage in shots on goal.


Woods Charter 6, Chatham Central 1
Lady Wolf freshman Isabel Pearce scored all six Woods Charter goals and No. 4 Woods Charter (14-4-1) beat visiting No. 12 Chatham Central (5-13) in the NCHSAA 1A State Tournament second round Friday evening in Chapel Hill.
Woods Charter led 3-1 at halftime. Julianna Puccio and Jade Ogilvie had two assists each.
Woods Charter will play at Whiteville in the round of 16 on Wednesday.


Hough 6, Pinecrest 0
Hough (21-0-2), the top seed in the NCHSAA 4A West bracket, rolled to a 5-0 halftime lead and defeated the visiting Lady Patriots (13-8-1) in a second round match Friday night.

O'Neal 5, Carolina Friends 3
The No. 6-seeded Falcons (13-3) defeated No. 10 Carolina Friends in the NCISAA 2A state semifinals Friday at Barton College, advancing to meet No. 1 Cape Fear Academy in the state final yesterday.


Freedom Christian 6, Cape Fear Christian 4
Cape Fear Christian 11, Ridgecroft 0
In the NCISAA 1A State Tournament in Greenville, top-seeded Cape Fear Christian was upset by No. 5 Freedom Christian in a winner's bracket game, then stayed alive in the double-elimination tournament with an 11-0 win over Ridgecroft, all on Friday.
The Lady Eagles (17-3) played another elimination game Saturday afternoon in the first of a possible tripleheader as the state tourney was set to conclude yesterday.


Elkin 2, Chatham Central 1
The Lady Bears, following a first-round upset win over North Moore in the NCHSAA 1A State Tournament, took a 1-0 lead in the second inning and held the lead until Elkin (16-8, No. 2 seed Mountain Valley) scored twice in the fifth Friday evening at Elkin.
Chatham Central ends the season 10-11 overall.


Jordan-Matthews 10, Eastern Randolph 0
The Lady Jets (19-4) exploded for seven runs in the third inning, for a 7-0 lead, and went on to beat rival Eastern Randolph in five innings in the NCHSAA 2A second round Friday night.
Caroline Webster and Katie Black had two RBI in the seven-run inning. The Lady Jets added three runs in the fifth. Holly Clark got the complete-game win.
Jordan-Matthews, the Mid-State champion, will play at PAC-6 champion Wheatmore (18-3) in the third round at 7 p.m. Tuesday.


Heritage 6, Harnett Central 5
Harnett Central scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh but couldn't get the tying run as Heritage (17-9) defeated the Trojans (16-6) in the NCHSAA 4A State Tournament second round in Angier Friday night.
Logan Ritchie had three hits and two RBI for the Trojans while Trey Gledhill also had two RBI.
