Cavalier golfers finish seventh in the state

4A State Championships
Pinecrest defeated Myers Park by one stroke, 19-20, on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff to win the NCHSAA 4A state championship at Pinehurst No. 8 on Tuesday.
Pinecrest and Myers Park tied at a 591 team total through two days of play. Myers Park came back from a six-stroke gap starting Tuesday's round.
Zach Martin made a birdie on the playoff hole as each other Patriot and Myers Park golfer made par. Martin shot a one-over 73 for the second straight round. Krystian Romero (74), James Sugg (76) and Austin Scarboro (77) completed the Patriot team score in the final round.
East Chapel Hill's Ben Griffin shot a five-under 67 in the second round and won the individual title by nine strokes at nine-under par.

3A State Championships
Southern Lee started the final round of the NCHSAA 3A State Championships in seventh and finished in seventh on Tuesday at Foxfire Golf and Country Club in Foxfire Village.
The Cavaliers improved their team total by three shots from round one to round two. Alex Palme (75), Zane Lewis (77), Matthew Honeycutt (79) and Jay Minter (83) made up Southern Lee's 314 score.
Forestview, from Gastonia, won the team championship with a 582 total, 22 strokes better than runner-up Williams. Forestview's Will Long shot 74 and 66 to win the medalist honor by a stroke over South Point's Nick Stafford.

Baseball
Northwood 8, Corinth Holders 6
Andrew Webster's three-run homer gave the Chargers the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning and Northwood (21-5) beat visiting Corinth Holders (17-7) to advance through the second round of the NCHSAA 2A State Tournament Tuesday night in Pittsboro.
Corinth Holders led 6-3 in the middle of the fifth before the Chargers, the champions of the Carolina 12 Conference, scored one run in the fifth and four more in the sixth. Webster's home run made it 8-6 Chargers.
Garrett Scott got the win on the mound and Robert Straughn got the save. Jon McKee, Justin King and Adam Lowe knocked in one RBI each.
Northwood will host First Flight (19-3), the champion of the Northeastern Coastal Conference, in a third round game Friday at 7 p.m.

South Stanly 10, North Moore 3
The Rowdy Rebel Bulls (23-4) blew open a close game to beat the visiting Mustangs (12-12) in a 1A second round game Tuesday night.
South Stanly led 4-3 after a Mustang tally in the top of the fifth before the Bulls struck for six runs in the home half of the frame. South Stanly, the Yadkin Valley's No. 1 seed, went 3-0 this season versus North Moore.

Western Alamance 3, Triton 2 - 8 innings
Western Alamance (22-5), champion of the 3A Mid-State Conference, advanced past visiting Triton (19-9) in a second round game Tuesday night.
Taylor Emory's two-run triple gave the Hawks a 2-0 lead in the second inning.

Cape Fear Christian 5, Greenfield 0
No. 2-seeded Cape Fear Christian (14-5) advanced to the championship series of the NCISAA 1A State Tournament with a shutout win over No. 6 Greenfield (12-5) Tuesday in Erwin.
The Eagles will face No. 1 Lawrence Academy (26-6) in a best-of-three series starting Friday at 7 p.m. at Fleming Stadium in Wilson.

Softball
West Bladen 4, Jordan-Matthews 3
West Bladen (23-2) scored three runs in the home half of the seventh to end the Lady Jet season in the second round of the NCHSAA 2A State Tournament.
The Lady Jets (13-8) scored all of their runs in the third for a 3-1 lead.

Eastern Alamance 7, Union Pines 0
Eastern Alamance (22-4) blanked the Lady Vikings (18-4) in a 3A second round game in Cameron Tuesday night. Union Pines finishes the season as the Cape Fear Valley Conference champion.

Fuquay-Varina 9, Pinecrest 0
Fuquay-Varina (14-4), No. 3 seed from the Tri-Nine, rolled past visiting Pinecrest (11-11) in the 4A second round, a game after the Lady Patriots got their first-ever state tournament win.

West Wilkes 8, North Moore 4
The Lady Blackhawks (21-3), the Mountain Valley Conference No. 1 seed, beat visiting North Moore (17-11) to end the Lady Mustang season in the second round of the 1A tournament.

Cape Fear Christian 10, Ridgecroft 1
No. 2-seeded Cape Fear Christian rolled past No. 7 Ridgecroft (7-10) in the opening round of the NCISAA 1A State Tournament on Tuesday.
The Lady Eagles (9-7) face No. 3 Hobgood (17-1) in the winners bracket of the double-elimination tournament today at 12:15 p.m. at Oakwood School in Greenville.

Girls soccer
American Hebrew Academy 1, O'Neal 0
No. 4-seeded American Hebrew Academy edged visiting No. 5 O'Neal in the quarterfinals of the NCISAA 2A State Tournament Tuesday afternoon. The Lady Falcons end the season 6-8-1 overall.
