Area scores: Lady Jackets tighten hold on first place

Volleyball

Lee County 3, Union Pines 0

Lee County (11-3, 8-1) made it five straight wins, all in Cape Fear Valley play, and kept hold of first place in the CFVC Thursday night at Union Pines (11-5, 6-3). The Lady Jackets, after a five-set win versus the Lady Vikings earlier this month, sweep Union Pines for the regular season.

The Lady Jackets will play at Chatham Central at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday. The Lady Vikings have two matches at Southwestern Randolph starting at 11 a.m. today.

Grace Christian 3, Chatham Charter 0

The Lady Crusaders made it back-to-back victories, following a five-set win versus Wayne Christian on Tuesday with a win over the Lady Knights Thursday. Grace Christian (4-7, 3-4) played Crossroads Christian last night and will host Cresset Christian at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Triton d. South Johnston 16-25, 26-24, 25-9, 18-25, 15-5

The Lady Hawks (11-2, 6-0) won a five-setter, their first five-set match in conference play this season, at South Johnston (9-6, 3-3) Thursday evening. Barbara Godwin led Triton with 21 kills.

The Lady Hawks will host Cleveland at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.


Knightdale d. Harnett Central 23-25, 25-14, 16-25, 26-24, 15-10

Knightdale (7-8, 6-4) took the last two sets to comeback and get a regular-season sweep versus Harnett Central (2-14, 2-7) Thursday night. Harnett Central will host Garner at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.


West Montgomery at Chatham Central 25-16, 25-15, 28-26

West Montgomery (14-3, 9-2) won in three sets at Chatham Central Thursday night. The Lady Bears (4-11, 2-8) will play at South Stanly at 6 p.m. Tuesday.


Cardinal Gibbons 3, Northwood 0

Cardinal Gibbons (14-0, 9-0) won with sweep at Northwood Thursday evening. The Lady Chargers (4-8, 2-7) will play at J.F. Webb at 6 p.m. Tuesday.


Soccer

Grace Christian 6, St. Thomas More 0

The Crusaders (16-2-1, 7-0-0) ran their winning streak to 12 matches and their shutout streak to seven matches on Thursday afternoon. Grace Christian played Crossroads Christian yesterday and will host Cresset Christian at 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Girls - Union Pines 16, Lee County 55, Terry Sanford 73, Douglas Byrd 95

The Lady Vikings improved to a 5-0 mark in conference meets winning a Cape Fear Valley meet at Clark Park in Fayetteville on Wednesday. Lee County finished second of four squads. The Lady Jackets are 3-1 in head-to-head CFVC meets this season.

The Lady Jaguars (4-5, 4-5) won at Mid-South Athletic match at home Thursday afternoon. Overhills edged Pine Forest 5-4 in both meetings this season. Overhills will play at E.E. Smith at 4 p.m. Tuesday.

JV Football

Southern Lee 22, Douglas Byrd 20

The JV Cavaliers won a Cape Fear Valley game at home Thursday night. The Cavaliers (3-2) will play at Gray's Creek this coming Thursday at 7 p.m.


Lee County 20, Gray's Creek 18

The JV Yellow Jackets (3-2) edged the Bears on the road in CFVC play Thursday night. Lee County is off until going to Union Pines on Oct. 10.


Northwood 30, Orange 19

The Chargers (4-0) remained perfect and gave Orange (3-1) its first loss on the road Thursday. Northwood will host Cedar Ridge at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.


Clayton 27, Harnett Central 13

The Comets won a conference game in Angier Thursday night. The Trojans (1-3) will play at Southeast Raleigh at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.


Rocky Mount 36, Triton 19

The Gryphons defeated the Hawks (2-2) in Erwin Thursday night. Triton is off until a game at South Johnston on Oct. 10.


Union Pines 30, Westover 28

The Vikings took their record to 4-1 with a CFVC win versus Westover Thursday night at Wilhoit Stadium. Union Pines will play at Terry Sanford at 7 p.m. Thursday.
