Crusaders finish sixth in Wells Fargo Cup
Grace Christian, in its second school year within the North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association, finished sixth in the 2012-13 Wells Fargo Cup standings in NCISAA 1A.
The Crusaders had fine seasons throughout the school year. During the fall, the Crusaders won their second straight Carolina Christian Conference season championship, then the CCC tournament title before finishing runner-up in the NCISAA State Tournament for the second consecutive year.
Grace Christian’s cross country team, coached by Tim Murr and Gena Carver, had two runners, B.J. Harrison and Andre Garcia, earn all-state honors as the boys’ team placed fourth at the state meet.
The Lady Crusader basketball team, coached by Joel Murr, reached the NCISAA state finals for the first time in program history. The Lady Crusaders went undefeated through CCC season and tournament play.
Grace Christian’s boys basketball team reached the 12-school state tournament. The swim team, under head coach Chris Luettger and in its second year at a varsity level, also had a strong showing in the state tournament.In the spring, the Crusader baseball team and girls soccer team both won conference tournament championships and made the quarterfinals of their state tournaments.
Six Crusader seniors earned athletic scholarships from colleges.
“Our coaches and staff are committed to finding a college for every athlete who wants to pursue it,” said principal, and boys and girls soccer head coach Chris Pratt.
Grace Christian is planning on adding varsity tennis, boys and girls teams, this coming school year.
“We have had middle school tennis for the past three years,” said Pratt. “Our kids are ready for the transition to varsity.”
Epiphany School in New Bern won the 2012-13 Wells Fargo Cup in the 1A class. Grace Christian improved from 19th last school year to sixth.
