Area scores: Vikings edge Cavs, 2-1, for CFVC baseball win

Baseball

Union Pines 2, Southern Lee 1

Following an 11-4 Cavalier win in a non-conference game earlier this month, and a night after Union Pines fell 17-5 at Lee County, the Vikings (4-4, 2-2) bounced back to beat the Cavaliers (5-3, 2-1) Friday night in Cameron. The Vikings scored the go-ahead run in the home half of the sixth.

Through Friday night's games in the CFVC, Lee County, with a 3-0 league mark, leads Terry Sanford, 2-0, by a half-game early on in the league campaign.

Southern Lee will play at Western Harnett at 7 p.m. Monday followed by a home date with Westover at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Union Pines will play at Douglas Byrd at 7 p.m. Tuesday.


Jordan-Matthews 14, Riverside 10

The Jets (5-2, 1-0) earned a season split with Riverside on Friday in Durham. The Jets have won three straight and will host Graham for a Mid-State Conference game at 7 p.m. Tuesday.


East Montgomery 2, Chatham Central 0

East Montgomery (3-2, 3-1) shut out the host Bears (1-4, 1-2) in a Yadkin Valley game Friday night.

Bear pitcher Zack Burke was the tough-luck loser, going a complete game giving up four hits and no earned runs while striking out 11. The Eagles held the Bears to three hits.

Chatham Central will play at West Montgomery at 7 p.m. Tuesday.


North Moore 19, South Davidson 7

The Mustangs (4-0, 3-0) trailed 4-1 after an inning before scoring four runs in the second, then an 11-run outburst in the fourth to go on to an YVC victory at South Davidson (2-5, 0-3) Friday.

The Mustangs will host East Montgomery at 7 p.m. Monday.


Lumberton 6, Pinecrest 5 - 10 innings

The Pirates (4-3, 1-0) matched a Patriot run in the ninth to keep playing, then got the winning run in the home half of the 10th in the Southeastern Conference opener for both squads at Lumberton Friday night.

The Patriots (6-2, 0-1) will play at Scotland at 7 p.m. Tuesday.


Harnett Central 3, Knightdale 2

The Trojans (4-1, 2-0) won their fourth straight game with a league win at home Friday night. Harnett Central will host Rolesville for a GNRC game at 6 p.m. Monday.


Seventy-First 19, Overhills 10

The Falcons (1-3, 1-1) posted nine runs in the third to take a 10-5 lead and go on to a Mid-South Athletic win at Overhills (0-6, 0-3) Friday night.

The Jaguars will play at Pine Forest at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Softball

Union Pines 16, Southern Lee 2

Lady Viking senior Lexie Coxe hit two home runs and totaled five RBI as Union Pines (5-1, 3-1) routed Southern Lee (0-7, 0-3) in a Cape Fear Valley game Friday night. The Lady Vikings scored 12 runs in the fourth inning taking a 16-0 lead.

Union Pines will play at Douglas Byrd at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Southern Lee will host Western Harnett at 6:30 p.m. Monday.

 

Northwood 2, Jordan-Matthews 1

Northwood (4-0, 1-0 Big Eight) provided freshman pitcher Kathy Boone with just enough run support to give her first varsity pitching win Friday night in a 2-1 county-rivalry victory over visiting Jordan-Matthews (4-3, 1-0 Mid-State).

Boone pitched a complete game, allowing seven hits and no walks while getting three strikeouts. Her Lady Jet counterpart, sophomore Holly Clark, also went the distance and gave up four hits and one walk with seven strikeouts.

The Lady Jets threatened in the first with Madison Poe and Dee Decristofaro getting hits, only for the Lady Chargers to leave them stranded. Kayli Blankenship walked and reached third base, but was left there, in the Lady Charger first.

Jordan-Matthews edged in front in the fourth with Clark scoring on a base hit to left field by Alanna Pyrtle.

Northwood tied the game in the bottom of the fourth. Courtney Wilson’s two-out single scored Alexa Bernard.

The Lady Chargers scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth on a solo home run over the left field fence by Bernard.

Boone held the Lady Jets in the seventh and Northwood kept its undefeated mark going.

Northwood will host Cedar Ridge for a Big Eight game at 6:30 p.m. Monday. Jordan-Matthews will play at Providence Grove at 7 p.m. Monday.


Pinecrest 6, Lumberton 2

Freshman Jordan Blake pitched a complete game and drove in three runs for the Lady Patriots in a Southeastern Conference win at Lumberton Friday night.

In the circle, Blake allowed one earned run. She walked one and struck out eight. At the plate, she went 2 for 3 with a double. Anna Bridgman went 2 for 4 and Bri Embler scored two runs.

Pinecrest (6-0, 1-0) will play an SEC game at Scotland at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

North Moore 11, South Davidson 2

The Lady Mustangs (5-0, 4-0) remained perfect with an easy Yadkin Valley Conference win over the Lady Wildcats (4-2, 2-2) Friday at home. North Moore will host Jordan-Matthews at 6 p.m. Tuesday.


Harnett Central 6, Knightdale 2

The Lady Trojans (4-1, 2-0) made it four straight wins with a Greater Neuse River win at home Friday evening. Harnett Central will host Rolesville in a conference game at 6 p.m. Monday.


Overhills 25, Seventy-First 0

The Lady Jaguars (2-4, 1-2) got their first-ever Mid-South Athletic Conference win in a big way Friday night in Spring Lake. Overhills will continue league play at Pine Forest at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Girls soccer

Union Pines 3, Southern Lee 0

Union Pines (4-1-1, 4-0-0) moved into sole possession of first place in the Cape Fear Valley Conference by blanking the Lady Cavaliers (5-2, 3-1) in Cameron Friday night. Southern Lee had a five-game winning streak going into the match.

Union Pines will host Gray's Creek at 7 p.m. Monday. Southern Lee will host Terry Sanford also at 7 p.m. Monday.

 

Grace Christian 9, Cresset Christian 0

Grace Christian opened its Carolina Christian Conference soccer slate with a 9-0 rout over Cresset Christian Friday afternoon.

Freshman Madison Bolen and sophomore Torie Boyte scored two goals each for the Lady Crusaders, each taking their season goal total to nine. The Lady Crusaders (4-0, 1-0) have netted 27 goals in their first four matches this season.

Freshman Jazmine Urrutia also scored two goals. Charity Taylor, Hannah Scully and Sarah Kelley scored a goal each.

Kyndle Wallace and Bolen notched three assists apiece. Bridgette Angeles and Boyte had an assist each.

Grace Christian is slated to continue CCC play at home versus Community Christian at 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Northwood 4, Cedar Ridge 0

The Lady Chargers (4-1, 1-0) opened their Big Eight season with a victory Friday over the Lady Red Wolves. Northwood will host Chapel Hill for a conference match at 6:45 p.m. Monday.

Triton 3, Cape Fear 0

Triton (4-3-1, 0-1-0 Two Rivers) avenged a 4-3 loss to Cape Fear from earlier this month with a win at Cape Fear (6-3) Friday night.

Morgan Goff had a goal and two assists while Jessica Portillo and Gabriella Rosado had a goal apiece.

Triton will host South Johnston for a Two Rivers match at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Knightdale 3, Harnett Central 0

Knightdale (3-4, 2-1) defeated the Lady Trojans (2-4, 1-2) in a Greater Neuse River match Friday night in Angier. Harnett Central will host Rolesville for a league match at 6 p.m. Monday.

Lumberton 1, Pinecrest 0

Lumberton (4-1, 1-0) handed the Lady Patriots (4-1-1, 2-1-0) their first Southeastern Conference loss since the 2007 season Friday night in Lumberton. Madison Sirmans scored the game's lone goal in the 57th minute.

Pinecrest will play an SEC match at Scotland at 7 p.m. Monday.


Gray's Creek 3, Overhills 1

Gray's Creek (5-2, 2-1) won a non-league match at Overhills (2-4, 2-1) Friday night. The Lady Jaguars came into the match off a 1-0 win over Seventy-First on Wednesday.

The Lady Jaguars will return to Mid-South Athletic play with a trip to Pine Forest at 7 p.m. Monday.

 

Boys golf

Lee County junior Walter Brinker won individual medalist honors in a playoff at Anderson Creek Golf Club in the Anderson Creek High School Elite Invitational Friday.

Brinker and Southeast Guilford’s Cody Jones each carded even-par 72s in the nine-school tournament. Brinker defeated Jones with a par on the second playoff hole to win the individual crown.

Green Hope finished first, with a team total of 312 (24 over par). Lee County finished fifth. Southern Lee finished sixth and Union Pines placed eighth.

The next Cape Fear Valley Conference match is scheduled for Monday afternoon at Sanford Golf Course.

Boys lacrosse

Northwood 13, J.F. Webb 5

The Chargers held a 5-4 edge at halftime before outscoring their visitors 6-1 in the third quarter and going on to a conference victory Friday evening.

Senior attack Wesley Meyers scored six goals and added two assists for the Chargers. Meyers scored his six tallies on nine shots on goal.

Tyler Romel had a hat trick and Jacob Bass scored two goals. Sophomore keeper Eric Franklin made nine saves.

Northwood (4-1, 2-0) will host Southern Alamance at 6 p.m. Wednesday.
