Crusaders finish runner-up in Ravenscroft tournament
Tournament-host Ravenscroft won the 41st annual Ravenscroft Invitational Tournament Saturday, defeating Grace Christian 4-0 in the final match.
Despite the result in the championship, the three-day tournament was still an excellent chance for Grace Christian’s team to grow and face superb competition. Two victories and a shot at the title proves the level where the Crusaders can play.
“It’s an honor to be in this tournament,” said Cruasder head coach Chris Pratt on Friday. “I just like the quality of soccer, the exposure to scouts for my guys and the way it is run.”
Grace Christian defeated Charlotte Latin 2-0 on Thursday. Charlotte Latin has won eight of the last 12 NCISAA 3A state championships.
The Crusaders, a NCISAA 1A program, broke up a 0-0 score in the 60th minute and prevailed 2-1 over North Raleigh Christian in a semifinal Friday. North Raleigh Christian, also a 3A squad, defeated the Crusaders 2-0 last week in Raleigh.
Midfielder Salvador Leonidez scored a goal versus Charlotte Latin and both Crusader goals in the semifinal. He was named to the all-tournament team along with midfielder Joel Benitez and goalkeeper Hugo Lemus.
The Crusaders (4-2-1) will host Wayne Country Day at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.
