Fayetteville Academy 4, O'Neal 1

No. 2-seeded Fayetteville Academy topped No. 3 O'Neal in the NCISAA 2A state semifinals on Friday in Gastonia.

Last week in a Cape Fear Independent Conference match, the Falcons (12-7-1) defeated Fayetteville Academy (16-7) 3-2. The Falcons had a 10-match winning streak going into the semifinal contest.

Fayetteville Academy took the lead in the 26th minute and held a 2-0 lead at halftime.

O'Neal cut the lead in half in the 49th minute when Rick Catania scored off an assist from Brian Subin.

Fayetteville Academy went on to score in the 58th and 70th minutes.

"O'Neal's greatest accomplishment this season was the way they came together as a team," said Falcon head coach David Wood, "never gave up on themselves or each other, and turned a losing season at 2-6-1 into the most successful soccer season O'Neal has seen in recent history."

"I could not be more proud of my players for all that they accomplished this year, despite the odds," Wood said.
