Crusaders head into tourney with a win
Zach Boggs poured in 28 points leading Grace Christian to a 65-47 victory over visiting Cape Fear Christian in the regular-season finale for the Crusaders Friday night.
On the Crusader senior night, longtime starters Robert Fulton and Isaac Kruger were recognized earlier in the evening.
Cape Fear Christian matched the Crusaders' racing tempo and made it a back-and-forth game early on. Boggs canned a corner three-pointer in the closing seconds of the first period for a 16-12 Crusader edge.
It was still a close game in the second period before Eagle foul trouble took a toll, swinging the interior and rebounding advantage to Grace Christian.
Crusader post men Braxton Diekhopf and Drew Williams stepped up, adding to the scoring Boggs was giving the Crusaders. Williams, off the bench, made three buckets in the second period helping the Crusaders build a 39-24 lead by the break. Boggs scored 18 points in the half, with three threes included, and Diekhopf had seven points and six rebounds.
The Eagles opened the third quarter with a 10-3 run, cutting the margin into single digits again.
A bucket in the lane by Diekhopf stopped the Eagle run and the Crusaders kept rolling to a 10-0 run. A smooth baseline drive and lay-in by Boggs made it 52-34. Grace Christian led 52-38 through three quarters.
The Crusaders had to hold off the Eagles yet again in the fourth quarter. An Eagle fast-break basket plus a personal foul and technical foul on the Crusaders added up to five points cutting the Crusader lead to 53-45.
Grace Christian scored the next five points, then took the lead to 63-47 with 4:00 remaining.
Diekhopf finished with 13 points, seven boards and three assists. Fulton had nine points and eight assists. Williams also scored nine points.
Grace Christian is the No. 4 seed going into the CCC Tournament. The Crusaders will host a quarterfinal game Tuesday night.
