Radley, Bloedorn share Lee County Amateur lead

Aug. 02, 2014 @ 07:45 PM

In conditions closer to October or November rather than the first weekend of August, many of the best amateur golfers in Lee County and the area turned out for the second Sanford Honda Lee County Amateur Championship at Carolina Trace Country Club’s Lake Course Saturday.

The wet conditions were tough some of the way, but also provided softer than normal greens. Defending and inaugural champion Jack Radley and Tony Bloedorn were the main golfers to take advantage. Radley and Bloedorn were the only two golfers to best par, both shooting 3-under 69, to lead the rest of the championship flight by four strokes.

Dylan Kennedy shot a 1-over 73 and will be in the last group with Radley and Bloedorn today as the final round begins with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. Micah Lawrence and Tony Fish shot 74s. Chris Holland and Michael Rhodes shot 75s.

Radley won the first-ever Lee County Amateur Championship on the same course last August, needing 39 holes to win. Radley shot 72 and 74 and needed a three-hole playoff to claim the championship.

There was a first in the two-year history of the tourney. Ed Snyder, of Sanford, made the first hole in one in the LCAC. Snyder aced the 225-yard No. 13, obviously claiming the closest to the hole prize for the day on the hole.

In the super senior flight (65 and over), Dale Bryant of Sanford leads by four strokes after shooting a 1-over 73. Jerry Merritt, in the super senior flight, was closest to the hole on No. 6 at 7-feet-2.

Other closest to the hole honors were picked up by Preston Gaster, on No. 8 and in the senior flight at 10-feet-2, and John Pridgen, on No. 15 and in the first flight, at 18-feet-10.

About 90 golfers are in the field for the second playing of the tournament. The championship flight, for players with a handicap at 4.9 or better, is playing the Lake Course at about 6,800 yards.

In the first flight, Matthew Honeycutt and Bobby Semler share the gross lead carding 75s. Bud Burgess, Chuck Smith and Pridgen are tied in the net category at 69.

In the senior flight, Raleigh’s Patrick Ponce leads with a 78. Sanford’s Chris Hayes shot 80 gross for a 60 net and a big lead in that category.

In the super seniors, Bryant’s 73 leads Charles Daley who shot 77 and Paul Gay who shot 78. Jim Morris, with a net 67, leads the net division.

Play today, rain or shine as yesterday, begins with all players beginning at 9 a.m.
