Jets shock No. 1 Cummings, reach Mid-State title game
Jordan-Matthews 54, Cummings 52 - OT
Hunter Causey made a game-winning three-pointer with 0.7 seconds left in overtime to give No. 4 Jordan-Matthews the upset win over No. 1 Cummings in a Mid-State Conference Tournament semifinal game Wednesday night in Burlington.
Cummings (17-6) defeated the Jets (10-15) twice in the regular season. This time, Jordan-Matthews led 32-25 going to the fourth quarter. Jaleel Dunn's basket with less than 30 seconds left in the fourth quarter made it 46-46 sending it to overtime.
Jordan-Matthews will play Thursday night's semifinal winner of Carrboro vs. Graham in the tournament final at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Cummings.
Chapel Hill 53, Northwood 49
No. 2 Chapel Hill (19-6) edged No. 7 Northwood (8-16) in the first round of the Big Eight Conference Tournament Wednesday at Chapel Hill. The Tigers went 3-0 over the Chargers for the season.
West Montgomery 56, Chatham Central 55
The Warriors (7-14) spoiled the Bears' regular season home finale Wednesday night.
Senior Zack Burke led the Bears with 24 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore Matt Clark scored 15 points.
Chatham Central (12-10, 7-6) plays at North Moore (14-8, 11-2) at 7:30 p.m. tonight.
Smithfield-Selma 55, Western Harnett 46
No. 3 Smithfield-Selma (9-15) made two wins in three games versus No. 6 Western Harnett (2-22), ending the Eagles' season in the first round of the Two Rivers Conference Tournament Wednesday night.
Southern Durham 66, Northwood 65
No. 5 Southern Durham (11-13) beat No. 4 Northwood for the second straight game, this one in Pittsboro in the first round of the Big Eight Conference Tournament Wednesday night.
Sophomore Alexis Joyner led Southern Durham with 27 points.
Kristian Eanes led the Lady Chargers with 17 points and Shontai Totten added 14 points. The Lady Chargers led 28-19 at halftime.
Northwood (17-8) will have to wait until Saturday to find out if it receives a wild card spot into the 3A state tournament.
Reidsville 56, Jordan-Matthews 38
No. 1 Reidsville (20-0) ousted the No. 5 Lady Jets (6-18) from the semifinals of the Mid-State tournament Thursday evening at Cummings.
Madison Poe led the Lady Jets with 18 points.
Triton 51, Western Harnett 46
No. 3 Triton (10-13) trailed 37-36 going to the fourth quarter before advancing by No. 6 Western Harnett (2-20) in the first round of the Two Rivers Conference Tournament Wednesday evening.
Sophomore Tarica Worney had 19 points and 13 rebounds for the Lady Hawks, with Brittany Smith adding eight points and eight boards.
Triton played No. 2 Cleveland in a semifinal game last night. The final is at the higher boys' finalist seed at 6 p.m. this evening.
West Montgomery 60, Chatham Central 48
West Montgomery defeated the Lady Bears (12-10, 8-5) on their Senior Night Wednesday in a Yadkin Valley Conference game.
West Montgomery led 28-16 at halftime and freshman Melanie Horne totaled 26 points.
Chatham Central plays its regular season finale at North Moore at 6 p.m. this evening.
