Division lead on the line for Camels, Keydets
Two of the hottest teams in the Big South meet this evening with an early stake on first place in the North Division on the line.
Campbell (8-9, 3-0), riding a five-game winning streak, concludes a stretch of three road games with a 7 p.m. tip at VMI (8-7, 3-0), which has a four-game winning streak, at the Keydets' Cameron Hall.
Campbell won its second straight game without leading scorer Darren White on Saturday with a 62-46 decision at Presbyterian.
CU opened the second half on a 12-0 run and hit 9-of-10 free throws in the last 1:10. Trey Freeman led the Fighting Camels with 13 points. Darius Leonard and Andrew Ryan scored 10 points each. Marvelle Harris grabbed 13 rebounds. CU held the Blue Hose to 32.7 percent field goal shooting, the lowest for a Camel opponent this season.
During the 5-0 streak, Campbell is shooting 49.8 percent from the floor while holding opponents to 38.8 percent. Freeman, averaging 16.4 points per game, is CU's leading scorer during the winning streak, along with Leonard at 11.0 points per game and Harris who's averaging 10.0 points and 7.4 rebounds a game.
Like Campbell, VMI is riding its longest win streak of the year. The Keydets are 6-1 at home this season and playing their third straight home game. VMI beat Winthrop 72-54 on Saturday behind 25 points and 13 rebounds from Preseason Big South Player of the Year Stan Okoye.
VMI ranks fourth in the nation in scoring, averaging 82.6 points per game, and fourth in three-pointers made per game at 9.4. Okoye is averaging 21.1 points per game.
In the only meeting between the Camels and Keydets last season, White scored 22 points to go with 16 rebounds and eight assists leading Campbell in an 80-73 win at Buies Creek.
Following Wednesday’s game, Campbell returns home to face Winthrop Saturday at 1 p.m. in a contest that will be aired on ESPN3.
