Area scores: Burke scores 30 in Bear YVC victory

Boys basketball
Chatham Central 75, East Montgomery 71
Senior forward Zack Burke scored 30 points leading the Bears (2-4, 2-0) to a Yadkin Valley Conference win at East Montgomery (1-6, 1-4) Friday night.
The Bears won the last period 22-16 to pull out the victory. Burke made 9 of 16 field goals and 12 of 15 free throws while getting 12 rebounds and four assists. Scotty Polston scored 16 points for the Bears. John Thomas Moore had 12 points and eight rebounds. Chris Murchison added 10 points.
Chatham Central will face West Montgomery in the Montgomery County Classic on Thursday.

Cardinal Gibbons 57, Northwood 48
The Crusaders (4-5, 1-1) topped the visiting Chargers (2-5, 0-2) in a Big Eight Conference game Friday night in Raleigh.
Moses Romocki led Cardinal Gibbons with 14 points. Jared Worley scored 19 points for Northwood and Ti Pinnix had 13 points.
The Chargers will play Union Pines in the first round of the Yellow Jacket Holiday Basketball Classic at 6 p.m. Friday in Lee County's Main Gym.

Pinecrest 69, R.J. Reynolds 62
The Patriots (2-6) stopped a six-game skid at R.J. Reynolds (4-5) in Winston-Salem Friday night.
Brandon Harrell and Kardashian Ragin led the Patriots with 18 points apiece. Brendan Ortiz added 11 points. Pinecrest got out to a 20-8 lead in the first quarter.
Pinecrest will host the Holiday in the Pines Tournament on Dec. 27, 28 and 30.

Overhills 67, Western Harnett 54
The Jaguars (6-2, 1-1) beat Western Harnett (1-9) for the second time this season Friday night.
Dexter McCrae scored 19 points for the Jaguars and Jeremiah Jenkins had 16 points. Jonathan Buie scored 16 points for the Eagles with Jalen Branch and Raekwon Rozier scoring 10 each.
Western Harnett will face East Chapel Hill in the first round of the Yellow Jacket Holiday Basketball Classic on Dec. 27 at Lee County.
Overhills is off until Jan. 7 and a Mid-South Athletic game at Seventy-First.

Triton 74, South Johnston 64
Triton pulled away in the second half and overcame South Johnston's Will Holmes going for 33 points to win its Two Rivers Conference opener Friday night in Erwin.
The Hawks (5-4, 1-0) had five players hit double-figure scoring. Nick Parker had 13 points and six assists. Trent Fennell had 13 points, including 4-of-4 three-point shooting. Dequill Avery scored 11. D'Angelo Harris had 10 points and six assists and Chris Eason had 10 points.
Triton won the third period 17-10 to take a 55-45 lead to the fourth.
Triton will be in the Nathan Gay Holiday Classic at Union Dec. 27-28.

Girls basketball
Chatham Central 48, East Montgomery 33
Chatham Central (3-3, 2-0) rolled past the Lady Eagles (0-8, 0-4) in Biscoe Friday night.
The Lady Bears will play Lee County on the first night of the Yellow Jacket Holiday Basketball Classic at 6 p.m. Friday in Lee County's Packard Gym.

Cardinal Gibbons 55, Northwood 38
Cardinal Gibbons (7-2, 2-0) won each period for a Big Eight Conference win at Northwood (6-2, 0-2) Friday night.
Shontai Totten led the Lady Chargers with 18 points.
Northwood will play Hoke County in the first round of the Yellow Jacket Holiday Basketball Classic at 8 p.m. Friday at Lee County.

Pinecrest 61, Mt. Zion Christian 23
The Lady Patriots (2-6) opened their Holiday in the Pines Tournament with an easy win Friday evening in Southern Pines.
Pinecrest led 17-10 at halftime before going on to a blowout. Jasmine Joy led the Lady Patriots with 18 points.
Pinecrest played Middle Creek in the championship game of the tournament last night.

Middle Creek 55, North Moore 35
Middle Creek led 11-0 after a quarter and continued on to top the Lady Mustangs (3-6, 2-2) in the Holiday in the Pines Tournament Friday night.
Ashley Shenk led Cary's Mustangs with 22 points. Andrea Brower led North Moore with 14 points.
North Moore played Mt. Zion Christian last night at Pinecrest.

Overhills 54, Western Harnett 43
Overhills (7-1, 1-1) completed a season sweep of the Lady Eagles (0-10) at Western Harnett Friday night.
Ge'Naisha Robinson led the Lady Jaguars with 20 points. Overhills led 23-22 at halftime.
Meredith Randolph led the Lady Eagles with 21 points and Geena Bryant scored 16 points.
Western Harnett will host Union Pines on Jan. 6. Overhills will return to Mid-South Athletic action at Seventy-First on Jan. 7.

South Johnston 49, Triton 45
South Johnston (8-4, 1-0) edged Triton (3-5, 0-1) in a Two Rivers Conference opener in Erwin Friday night.
Kadizah Gaulden scored 13 points and Je'nae Harvey had nine points for Triton.
The Lady Hawks will play East Bladen in the Nathan Gay Holiday Classic at Union on Dec. 27.

Southwestern Randolph 42, Jordan-Matthews 21
Southwestern Randolph doubled up the Lady Jets on the first night of the Courier Tribune Christmas Tournament at Southwestern Randolph Friday.
The game was a rematch of a Lady Jet win in the final of the 2012 tournament.
Madison Poe led the Lady Jets with 11 points.
The tournament continued Saturday and concludes Monday.
