Chatham Central wins Montgomery County Classic title

Boys basketball

Chatham Central 73, West Montgomery 70 - OT

Chatham Central rallied from five points down starting the fourth quarter, winning the period 24-19, then won the overtime period 9-6, to top West Montgomery in the first round of the Montgomery County Classic on Thursday.

Senior Zack Burke had 25 points with eight rebounds and three blocked shots. Sophomore Matt Clark scored 18 points and got six boards. Burke and Clark combined to go 18 of 25 on free throws.

John Thomas Moore scored 15 points and Scotty Polston scored 12. Moore and Polston hit two three-pointers each.


Chatham Central 65, East Montgomery 46

The Bears (4-4, 2-0 YVC) defeated the tournament hosts for the championship Friday night. Zack Burke led the Bears with 30 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Burke made 10 of 15 field goals and 10 of 12 free throws.

Matt Clark scored 18 points and John Thomas Moore had four points, eight rebounds and four steals.

Chatham Central led 35-31 at halftime before taking control in the third period.

The Bears will get back into Yadkin Valley play hosting Albemarle at 7:30 p.m. Friday.


Northwood 63, Union Pines 48

The Chargers (3-5, 0-2 Big Eight) stopped a three-game losing streak in the opening round of the Yellow Jacket Holiday Basketball Classic Friday night at Lee County.

Northwood advanced to play Lee County in a semifinal game Saturday night. The Vikings (4-6, 0-3 CFVC) played Overhills last night.

The Classic ends Monday with the boys seventh- and third-place games at 4 p.m. and the fifth-place and championship games set for 8 p.m.

East Chapel Hill 60, Western Harnett 47

The Wildcats (6-4) built a 33-17 halftime lead and led by 19 going to the fourth quarter to beat Western Harnett (1-10) in the Yellow Jacket Holiday Basketball Classic on Friday.

Kyle Chavis led the Wildcats with 13 points and Carter Collins added 12 points.

Western Harnett played Carrboro last night while East Chapel Hill faced Cary.


Whiteville 52, Southern Lee 49

The Wolfpack (6-0) stopped a six-game Cavalier winning streak on Friday in the first round of the Woodmen of the World Christmas Tournament at West Bladen High School.

The Cavaliers (6-4, 2-0 CFVC) played Scotland County last night. The tournament concludes Monday.


Pinecrest 69, North Moore 34

The Patriots (3-6) avenged a 60-39 North Moore win from Nov. 22 with a larger blowout in the first round of the Holiday in the Pines Tournament Friday night in Southern Pines. Pinecrest met Pender last night and North Moore (5-4) played Richmond County.

Kardashian Ragin led the Patriots with 17 points. Brandon Harrell scored 13 points and Justin Marks had 12 points. Pinecrest led 39-10 at halftime. Malik Chisholm led the Mustangs with eight points.


Triton 69, East Bladen 45

The Hawks led 29-24 at halftime before turning the game into a rout versus East Bladen (4-5) in the first round of the Nathan Gay Holiday Classic at Union High School Friday night.

Dequill Avery had 14 points and nine rebounds for the Hawks (6-4) and Nick Parker had 14 points with five assists. Chris Eason added 12 points.


Asheboro 67, Jordan-Matthews 48

The host Blue Comets (8-2) pulled away in the fourth quarter for a win over the Jets (4-4) in the Courier Tribune Christmas Invitational on Friday.

Jordan-Matthews cut a 16-point lead to 48-41 starting the fourth quarter but couldn't continue the comeback. Jaleel Dunn and Bryson Bittle scored 13 points each for the Jets.

Jordan-Matthews played Wheatmore yesterday and the tourney will conclude Monday.

Girls basketball

Northwood 62, Hoke County 25

The Lady Chargers (7-2, 0-2 Big Eight) led 18-2 after a quarter and rolled past Hoke County (1-7) in a first-round game in the Yellow Jacket Holiday Basketball Classic Friday night at Lee County High School.

Guard Shontai Totten led Northwood with 21 points and Jazanae Billings added 11 points.

Hoke County played Lee County yesterday while Northwood faced county neighbor Chatham Central. The Yellow Jacket Holiday Basketball Classic ends Monday with, in the girls bracket, the seventh- and third-place games at 2 p.m. and the fifth-place and championship games at 6 p.m.

Apex 53, Union Pines 33

Apex (8-1, 2-0 SWAC) led the Lady Vikings (8-2, 3-0 CFVC) 24-19 at halftime before pulling away in the second half in the first round of the Yellow Jacket Classic Friday.

Aliya Ruffin led the Lady Cougars with 11 points. Sophomore Maresa Smith had nine points, three rebounds and three steals for UP and freshman Nyona Shields scored seven points.

East Bladen 65, Triton 48

East Bladen (10-0) remained perfect on the season, topping Triton (3-7) in the first round of the Nathan Gay Holiday Classic Friday night.

East Bladen led 13-12 after one period before taking a big lead with a 21-5 second quarter.

The tournament at Union High School ended last night.
