Camels host High Point this evening
Campbell opens Big South regular season play welcoming defending North Division champion High Point at Gore Arena at 7 p.m. tonight.
The Camels (6-9, 0-0) dropped a 70-60 decision Saturday to Delaware St. despite a strong showing by the Camel bench. D.J. Mason scored 18 points (7-11 FG) and grabbed seven rebounds, while Marvelle Harris had 12 points (5-5 FG) and six boards. Reco McCarter added 14 points and five assists for the Camels.
McCarter was named Big South Player of the Week on Monday after averaging 21.5 points, 5.0 rebounds and 5.0 assists in two games last week. He shot 50 percent from the floor and 81.3 percent from the line. McCarter scored a career-high 29 points while dealing five assists with no turnovers versus East Carolina.
High Point (4-9, 0-0) ended a seven-game losing streak Friday with an 85-78 victory over Div. II Lees-McRae. Forward John Brown scored 25 points on 9-of-14 shooting, 7-8 from the line, and grabbed eight rebounds for the Panthers.
Brown is the Big South's Preseason Player of the Year. He's averaging 18.1 points, 7.7 rebounds and 1.7 blocked shots a game. The Panthers have been without preseason all-conference forward Allan Chaney for the last eight games due to health concerns.
Campbell stands 4-4 at Gore Arena this year, while High Point is 1-7 on the road.
Last season, the Panthers claimed two close games with the Camels. High Point won 58-52 on Feb. 6 in Buies Creek, then claimed a 63-62 win at High Point on Mar. 2.
The Camels are averaging 6.5 turnovers over the last two games, while giving up six second-chance points per contest over the last three outings.
High Point finished 0-4 from 3-point range against Lees-McRae last Friday, ending a streak of 381 games that dated to the 2000-01 season with at least one made 3-point field goal.
Following the conference opener, the Camels hit the road in Big South play Saturday for a 5 p.m. start at Longwood.
