Reco McCarter scored 19 points, including a late 3-pointer, to lead Campbell over High Point 74-71 on Wednesday on the Big South opener for the Fighting Camels and visiting Panthers.

Campbell (7-9, 1-0) held a 15-point halftime lead, 40-25, and survived a comeback attempt by High Point (4-10, 0-1) to hang on to the conference win.

High Point trailed by nine after Leek Leek's layup with 6:28 left made it 69-60. But the Panthers used an 11-2 run, including a three-pointer by Adam Weary to tie at 71 with 2:33 left, but those were the last points High Point scored in the game.

McCarter hit a trey with 1:18 remaining to break the tie and High Point missed its final three shots, all three-point attempts.

Weary led High Point with 22 points, while John Brown and Dejuan McGaughy both had 15 points. Brown added 10 rebounds. The Panthers shot 38.5 percent (10 for 26) from the field in the first half, then 65.4 percent in the second half.

McCarter and Antwon Oliver, who scored 13 points off the bench, knocked down three three-pointers each. The Camels made 12 of 31 (38.7 percent) three-point shots.

Darius Leonard scored nine points for the Camels with Andrew Ryan scoring eight points and Leek and Kyre' Hamer adding seven points each.

Campbell will continue Big South play on the road at Longwood at 5 p.m. Saturday.
