No. 27 Camels run win streak to 8
Six Camels posted multiple hits and Ryan Mattes struck out seven for his sixth win to push No. 27 Campbell past Radford 11-3 Friday night at Jim Perry Stadium.
Campbell moves to 23-3 overall with its eighth straight win, and 6-1 in Big South games, while Radford dips to 12-11 on the season and 2-2 in conference games. The series will continue Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
Senior infielder Brent Graham paced Campbell with a 3-for-4 night, knocking in one and scoring twice in the win, while David Olson, Nick Ray and Trevor Lane all drove in two on two hits each.
Michael Felton scored two runs, going 1-for-3 with a RBI, while Michael DeLucia and Ben McQuown added a pair of hits for the Camels.
After the Highlanders scored a run in the first inning, the Camels scored six runs on seven hits in the bottom of the first. The first three Camel hitters, McQuown, Graham and Felton singled. Ray hit a two-RBI triple putting the Camels up 4-1.
Mattes, a senior righthander, moved to 6-1 on the season, fanning seven in seven innings with three runs on 10 hits and two walks. Coley Thompkins pitched two innings, allowing a pair of hits.
Tyler Costello (3-3) took the loss for Radford, allowing nine runs, seven earned, on eight hits in 2.1 innings of work. Dylan Nelson allowed two runs on five hits with three strikeouts in 3.2 innings. Mitchell MacKeith and Chase Lemaster pitched the final two stanzas for the Highlanders.
Blake Sipe went 3-for-4 for the Highlanders with a run scored, while Josh Gardiner, Josh Reavis and Jeff Kemp each grabbed two hits.
The Camels will play at North Carolina A&T (April 2, 6 p.m.) and host Old Dominion (April 3, 6 p.m.) in the midweek following the Radford series.
