Area scores: Nine-run Jet attack takes Jordan-Matthews through tourney semis

Jordan-Matthews 12, Bartlett Yancey 2

The Jets (18-5) scored nine runs in the bottom of the third, turning a tight game into a 12-2 margin, leading to a five-inning win in the Mid-State Conference Tournament semifinals Wednesday night at Graham. No. 1 Jordan-Matthews played Carrboro in the final last night.

Senior Nathan Poirier went 3 for 3 with a double, a home run, three runs scored and seven RBI for the Jets. Hunter Causey went 2 for 4 with a double, a run and an RBI. Ethan Cook pitched four innings for the win. He allowed three hits and one earned run.

 

Pinecrest 7, Lumberton 2

The Patriots (19-4) broke out to a 4-1 lead in the first inning, largely thanks to a three-run home run by Seve Shultis, and won a Southeastern Conference Tournament semifinal game Wednesday night. Tristan Helms got the win on the mound.

No. 2 Pinecrest won a coin toss on Saturday to be the higher seed over No. 3 Lumberton (15-9). The Patriots play at No. 1 Richmond in the final at 7 p.m. tonight. The Patriots and Raiders split during the regular season. The Patriots have won 12 of their last 13 with the loss being a 6-5 defeat at Richmond last week.

 

Cleveland 5, Western Harnett 4

Cleveland (11-11) edged the Eagles in Western Harnett's regular-season finale Friday, then again in the first round of the Two Rivers Conference Tournament on Wednesday.

The Eagles (7-15) took a 4-3 lead with a run in the top of the fifth. The Rams responded with a run in the sixth and a run for a walk-off win in the seventh. No. 4 Cleveland played top-seeded Triton in a semifinal at Triton last night. The tournament final is set for 7 p.m. tonight at Triton.

 

River Mill Academy 9, Chatham Charter 4

The Jaguars (5-13) topped the visiting Knights (3-11) Wednesday in Graham.

 

Softball

Pinecrest 4, Scotland 3 - 9 innings

Pinecrest (13-5) advanced to the Southeastern Conference Tournament final with a nine-inning win Wednesday evening in Southern Pines.

Freshman Jordan Blake pitched a complete game for the Lady Patriots, giving up 13 hits but one earned run. She struck out six and added an RBI at the plate.

Scotland tied the game, 3-3, with a run in the top of the seventh. Pinecrest has won all three meetings with Scotland, two being nine-inning games.

Carmen Love went 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI for the Lady Patriots. Madison Thum went 2 for 4 with a run. Erica Goff had one RBI.

Pinecrest plays at No. 1 Richmond (24-0) in the championship game at 7 p.m. tonight.

 

Triton 10, Smithfield-Selma 0

No. 3-seeded Triton (14-7) rolled through the first round of the Two Rivers Conference Tournament in five innings Wednesday.

Lindsey Champion pitched a two-hitter with three walks and four strikeouts. At the plate, Gracey Spivey went 3 for 3 with a double, a home run and three runs scored. Erica Occena went 2 for 4 with two RBI and a run. Taylor Adams and Alexis Hobson scored two runs each.

The Lady Hawks played No. 2 Cleveland in a semifinal last night. The tournament final is set for 7 p.m. tonight hosted at South Johnston.

 

Corinth Holders 6, Western Harnett 0

No. 4 Corinth Holders (9-11) topped the No. 5 Lady Eagles (5-14) for the second time in three meetings this season in the Two Rivers Tournament Wednesday. Corinth Holders faced South Johnston in the semifinals last night.

 

Jordan-Matthews 11, Carrboro 0

The top-seeded Lady Jets (16-4) scored all their runs in the first three innings and won in five frames in a Mid-State Conference Tournament semifinal game in Siler City Wednesday. The Lady Jets held No. 4 Carrboro (7-11) to one hit.

No. 2 Graham defeated No. 3 Bartlett Yancey 13-9 in the other semifinal. Graham and Jordan-Matthews played in the final last night.

 

North Moore 7, Chatham Central 0

The top-seeded Lady Mustangs (17-3) beat the Lady Bears (8-10) in a Yadkin Valley Conference - East Division Tournament semifinal at West Montgomery Wednesday afternoon, advancing into last night's final game.

 

Girls soccer

Chatham Charter 3, Research Triangle 1

The Lady Knights (3-9-1) claimed their second straight 3-1 victory versus Research Triangle on Wednesday. Chatham Charter will play in the Community Baptist Invitational Friday and Saturday. The Lady Knights will meet Salem Baptist at 3:45 p.m. Friday followed by Community Baptist at 6:15 p.m.

 

West Johnston 9, Harnett Central 0

The Lady Wildcats (19-1-2, 12-1-1) routed Harnett Central (7-10-2, 5-7-2) in a Greater Neuse River match Wednesday night in Benson. The Lady Trojans finish fifth for the season in the GNRC.

 

Northwood 9, Southern Durham 0

The Lady Chargers ran their winning streak to seven matches, with six clean sheets included, routing visiting Southern Durham Wednesday evening. Northwood (13-5, 10-3) played its regular-season finale at Chapel Hill last night. The Lady Chargers stood third in the Big Eight Conference heading into last night's game.
