The Chargers (22-5) scored two runs in the home half of the fifth to gain the lead and go on through the third round of the NCHSAA 2A State Tournament Friday night in Pittsboro.

First Flight (19-4), champ of the Northeastern Coastal Conference, was tied with the Chargers until Trevor Hackney hit a two-out, two-RBI single giving Northwood a 5-3 lead.

Robert Straughn pitched 6.1 innings to get the victory. He allowed four hits and three runs while striking out eight. Garrett Scott got the save, closing out the win after First Flight loaded the bases with one out in the seventh.

Northwood eliminated the Night Hawks for the second straight season as the Chargers won a quarterfinal game 7-1 last May in Kill Devil Hills.

Northwood, the Carolina 12 champion, will host Carolina 12 No. 3 seed Carrboro (13-11) in a quarterfinal Tuesday. Carrboro advanced through the third round with a 9-2 win at North Pitt Friday.

Top-seeded Lawrence Academy (28-6) won its sixth straight NCISAA 1A state baseball championship taking the final series 2-0 on Friday night and Saturday morning at Fleming Stadium in Wilson.

The No. 2-seeded Eagles (14-7) advanced through the tournament with wins over Hickory Christian and Greenfield.


Cape Fear Christian 9, Hobgood Academy 6

Oakwood School 6, Cape Fear Christian 0

No. 2-seeded Cape Fear Christian (10-8) defeated No. 3 Hobgood (17-2) and lost to No. 1 Oakwood (17-0) in the winner’s bracket of the NCISAA 1A State Tournament at Oakwood in Greenville Friday.

Oakwood advanced to the championship game with the victory while the Lady Eagles dropped to an elimination game and a rematch with Hobgood. The tournament was slated to conclude Saturday.
