Area scores: Patriots win in nine in first round of states

Pinecrest 7, Ashley 6 - 9 innings

Pinecrest's Jackson Maples hit a tying grand slam, making it 6-6 in the home half of the sixth, then the Patriots won on an RBI single by Michael Jacobs in the ninth inning to advance past Ashley (16-8) in the NCHSAA 4A State Tournament Tuesday night in Southern Pines.

The Patriots (20-5), No. 2 seed from the Southeastern Conference, will play at No. 1 Rose (21-2) in the second round at 7 p.m. Saturday in Greenville. Rose defeated South View 6-3 in the first round.

Hunt 7, Northwood 3

Hunt, the No. 2 seed from the Big East Conference, topped visiting Northwood, No. 3 from the Big Eight, in the first round of the NCHSAA 3A State Tournament Tuesday evening in Wilson.

Connor Leinbach went 3 for 4 with a run and Trevor Hackney had a double and two RBI for the Chargers (11-11).

Colton Griffin (7-2) got the win for the Warriors (14-10) while Garrett Scott got the loss for Northwood.

Gray's Creek 5, Triton 3

Gray's Creek (14-11), No. 4 seed from the Cape Fear Valley, scored three runs in the top of the seventh to come from behind and defeat Triton (16-6), top seed of the Two Rivers Conference, Tuesday night in Erwin.

Collin Ford went 3 for 3 with two runs scored for the Bears. Gatlin Pate pitched two scoreless innings in relief to get the win.

Tyler Vaughn went 2 for 4 with a run and an RBI and Austin Lee went 2 for 3 with a run for the Hawks.

Harnett Central 9, Fuquay-Varina 3

The Trojans (16-5) scored all of their runs in the fourth inning, building a 9-0 lead, which was enough to defeat the Bengals (13-11), No. 3 seed from the Southwestern Wake Athletic Conference, in the first round the NCHSAA 4A tournament Tuesday night in Angier.

Cole Hart started on the mound and went 5.2 innings. He allowed five hits and three runs, two earned, and struck out five in getting the win. Austin Mendenhall relieved for 1.1 scoreless innings.

Hart led the Trojans at the plate going 3 for 4 with a double and two RBI. Logan Ritchie had two runs and two RBI. Trey Gledhill had a run and two RBI.

Harnett Central, No. 2 seed from the Greater Neuse River, will host No. 4 Heritage at 6 p.m. Friday in the second round.


Northern Guilford 1, Northwood 0

The Lady Nighthawks (13-10), No. 5 seed from the Mid-State, upset Big Eight-champ Northwood (20-2) in the NCHSAA 3A State Tournament first round Tuesday evening in Pittsboro.

Northern Guilford scored an unearned run in the seventh to take the lead. The Lady Nighthawks outhit the Lady Chargers 5-4.

Sophomore Anna Jasper (12-2) pitched a complete game and struck out eight for the Lady Chargers.

Hoggard 2, Pinecrest 0

Hoggard (12-10) and freshman pitcher Morgan Mathis held the Lady Patriots to three hits to win on the road in the NCHSAA 4A State Tournament first round Tuesday evening.

Jordan Blake started and pitched four innings, giving up two runs, for the Lady Patriots. Bobbie McDaniel relieved Blake and held the visitors the last three innings.

The Lady Patriots (13-7) finished second in the SEC.

Ashley 6, Harnett Central 4

Ashley (16-9), top seed from the Mideastern Conference, held off Harnett Central (10-10) in the first round of the NCHSAA 4A tournament in Wilmington Tuesday.

The Lady Trojans tied the game, 2-2, with two runs in the second before Ashley moved out to a 6-2 lead. Harnett Central scored twice in the fifth but couldn't cut the lead more.

Jessie Mangum went 2 for 3 with two RBI and a run while Madalyn Hamilton went 2 for 3 with an RBI for Harnett Central.

Robyn Kerr (15-3) got the pitching win for Ashley.

C.B. Aycock 10, Triton 0

C.B. Aycock (16-2), No. 1 seed from the Eastern Carolina Conference, topped former conference mate Triton (14-9) in the first round of the NCHSAA 3A tournament Tuesday in Pikeville.

C.B. Aycock held the Lady Hawks to three hits. The contest was scoreless until the hosts took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the third.

Cape Fear Christian 11, Terra Ceia 0

Top-seeded Cape Fear Christian (16-2) opened the NCISAA 2A State Tournament with a victory at home Tuesday. The double-elimination tournament will continue Friday and Saturday at Oakwood School. The Lady Eagles will play No. 5 Freedom Christian in a winners bracket game at 10 a.m. Friday.

Pinecrest 4, Southeast Guilford 3 - PKs

No. 16-seeded Pinecrest (13-7-1) played No. 17 Southeast Guilford (12-5-1) to a 3-3 draw through regulation and overtime before winning the penalty-kick tiebreaker 3-0 to advance through the first round of the NCHSAA 4A State Tournament Tuesday in Southern Pines.

The Lady Patriots will play the winner of No. 1 Hough vs. No. 32 McDowell in the 4A West second round.

No. 6-seeded O'Neal (12-3) advanced through the first two rounds of the NCISAA 2A State Tournament on Monday and Tuesday, advancing to the semifinals to be played Friday at Barton College.

The Falcons will face No. 10 Carolina Friends at 4:30 p.m. Friday. The other semifinal is No. 1 Cape Fear Academy vs. No. 4 Trinity School of Durham. The championship is set for 10 a.m. Saturday at Barton.
