Young Camel wins 38th Brick Capital Classic

Sanford Golf Course PGA pro David Von Canon and many of the course's members who love playing in the Brick Capital Classic each summer call the Classic, "Sanford's little U.S. Open" - and they have long before the 2014 edition played Saturday and Sunday at Sanford Golf Course.

Campbell University golfer Gaston Bertinotti in effect called it his Sanford North and South Amateur and he hopes it'll prove good preparation for him. Bertinotti, a rising sophomore on the Camel golf team and a native of Cordoba, Argentina, shot 3-under par on the back nine Sunday holding off David Wicker and Jack Radley for a two-shot victory in his first time playing in the Brick Capital Classic.

"Some friends invited me to play because I'm playing in a big tournament next week," Bertinotti said.

Bertinotti heads right down the road to Pinehurst as the 113th Men's North and South Amateur Championship begins with practice rounds Monday and the first round Tuesday at Pinehurst No. 8.

He held the lead throughout the back nine, but had to remain aggressive all the way in.

"It was really good competition. There were a lot of guys under par," he said. "I had to keep my concentration and continue making birdies."

Bertinotti was 3-under overall and got word he was leading as he started his last nine. He said knowledge of a slim lead made him more aggressive. He made birdie threes on No. 10 and No. 12.

"(The birdies) helped me a lot with my confidence," he said.

Wicker, the four-time champion of the Classic, shot the best round of Sunday with a 5-under 66. Playing a couple groups ahead of Bertinotti, who himself was in the next-to-last foursome, Wicker posted a score which surprised Bertinotti - who was 5-under coming down No. 18 and didn't know about Wicker's 4-under final until getting up to the green.

Bertinotti hit the par-five green in two and made birdie, not coming close to falling into a playoff.

Radley, a Sanford amateur who was the defending champion, was the only golfer besides Bertinotti to break 70 both days.

Sherrill Britt, the first-round leader after a 5-under 66, shot 75 Sunday.

Deane Hundley, with a 69 and a 76, and Dale Bryant, with a 72 and a 73, shared the Senior First Flight title.

In his first season with Campbell, Bertinotti tied for second in the Big South Conference championship at The Patriot at Grand Harbor (S.C.) in April shooting 70, 70 and 74.
