Cavaliers move into first in CFVC baseball race

Southern Lee 6, Union Pines 3

The Cavaliers (16-4, 8-1) gained sole possession of first place in the Cape Fear Valley, with the Cavs having three CFVC games left to play, with a big victory over Union Pines (13-5, 7-2) at Southern Lee Saturday night. The Cavs and Vikings split for the regular season.

Derek Jackson pitched a complete game for the Cavs, allowing one earned run and getting 12 strikeouts. Jackson improved to a 6-1 mark.

Freddy McCollum went 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI. Ethan Helsman went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Jared Kehagias hit a home run.

For the Vikings, Dalton Garner went 2-for-3 with a double, a triple, a run and an RBI. Mason Collins had a triple, an RBI and a run.

Southern Lee plays at Douglas Byrd Tuesday at 7 p.m. Union Pines hosts Western Harnett Tuesday at 7 p.m.

South Stanly 2, Chatham Central 0

The Rowdy Rebel Bulls (19-2, 13-1) got a two-hitter by senior Russ Weiker for a season sweep over the Bears (10-8, 8-4) in a Yadkin Valley game Saturday afternoon in Bear Creek. Weiker had four strikeouts and no walks.

Chase Fuquay got the tough-luck loss, giving up six hits while striking out 12. South Stanly took the lead with two runs in the fourth.

Chatham Central plays a YVC game at Albemarle Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Pinecrest 12, Purnell Swett 4

Patriot pitcher Aaron Reimer got the victory and hit a two-run homer as Pinecrest (13-7, 4-4) won a Southeastern Conference game Saturday in Southern Pines.

Jackson Smith had three hits, two RBI and two runs for the Patriots.

Pinecrest hosts Richmond in an SEC game Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Terry Sanford 11, Western Harnett 6

Terry Sanford (21-2, 11-0) won a non-conference contest in Lillington Saturday afternoon.

Senior Josh Genthe went 4-for-4 with a double, a triple and three runs for the Eagles and senior Shane Godfrey hit a three-run home run.

Western Harnett (5-11, 4-5) plays at Union Pines Tuesday at 7 p.m.


Chatham Central 4, West Stokes 2

The Lady Bears (14-0, 12-0) took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first and led the rest of the afternoon at West Stokes Saturday.

Chatham Central hosts Albemarle Tuesday at 6 p.m.

Pinecrest 16, Triad 2

The Patriots (6-0) rolled to their second win of the year, and their most goals in a match this season, against Triad on Saturday afternoon. The Patriots hosts Village Christian Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
