Area scores: Vikings blank Gray's Creek for third straight win

Baseball

Union Pines 6, Gray's Creek 0

The Vikings (6-4, 4-2) made it three straight Cape Fear Valley victories, while allowing one run in those wins versus Southern Lee, Douglas Byrd and the Bears (3-7, 1-4) on Friday night in Cameron.

Union Pines goes out of conference but in county to play at North Moore at 7 p.m. Monday.

Overhills 20, E.E. Smith 10

The Jaguars (1-7, 1-4) got their first win of the season and of their Mid-South Athletic Conference era Friday night at home in Spring Lake. The Jaguars will play at Jack Britt at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

West Montgomery 6, North Moore 2

The Warriors took a Yadkin Valley Conference win in Robbins Friday night. The Mustangs (4-3, 3-2) will host Union Pines at 7 p.m. Monday.

Softball

Southern Lee 9, Terry Sanford 5

The Lady Cavaliers (2-8, 2-3) made it back-to-back conference victories, building on a 25-2 win versus Westover a few nights earlier, at home Friday night in rainy and foggy conditions. Southern Lee will play at Lee County (4-2, 3-1) in a CFVC game at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.


Gray's Creek 8, Union Pines 1

Gray's Creek (9-1, 5-0) took over sole possession of first place in the Cape Fear Valley with a victory at Union Pines (6-2, 4-1) Friday night. The Vikings are a half-game ahead of Lee County in second place.

The Lady Bears scored twice in the top of the first and continued on for a 5-1 lead through three innings.

Union Pines will play at Western Harnett at 7 p.m. Thursday.


Overhills 23, E.E. Smith 6

E.E. Smith (3-8, 0-5) led 5-0 in the middle of the second inning before the Lady Jaguars (3-5, 2-3) posted innings of seven, eight and eight runs in succession to win a conference game in a rout Friday night.

Riley Nunemaker had four hits for the Lady Jags and Jordan Adcox knocked in four RBI. Kelsie White was the winning pitcher.

Overhills will play at Jack Britt at 7 p.m. Tuesday.


Girls soccer

Union Pines 8, Richmond 0

The Lady Vikings (7-1-1, 5-0-0 CFVC) hammered visiting Richmond (2-5-1, 1-2-0 Southeastern) Friday night, taking their winning streak to four matches. Union Pines will host Westover at 7 p.m. Monday. The Lady Vikings beat the Lady Wolverines 10-0 earlier this month.

Cape Fear 4, Pinecrest 3

The Lady Colts (8-4, 4-1 Mid-South Athletic) edged Pinecrest (6-2-1, 4-1-0 Southeastern) Friday in Southern Pines. The Lady Patriots will host Richmond for an SEC match at 7 p.m. Monday.

Boys lacrosse

Northwood 23, Northern Vance 2

Senior Wesley Meyer led the Chargers with six goals as they routed Northern Vance on the road Friday night. The Chargers (6-1) stormed to a 15-0 lead by halftime.

Jacob Bass scored four goals and Tyler Romel added three. Jacob Orbich, Sean O'Donnel and Josh Kaegi scored two goals each.

Northwood has a six-game winning streak and will play at Roxboro Community at 6 p.m. Monday.
