Lady Cavaliers rally to top Gray's Creek

Southern Lee d. Gray's Creek 18-25, 23-25, 26-24, 25-23, 16-14
The Lady Cavaliers (3-0, 2-0) had to fight back from two sets down and pull out three sets by two points each for a Cape Fear Valley victory at home Thursday night vs. Gray's Creek (4-2, 0-2). Southern Lee won the JV match as well, 25-21, 25-22.
Southern Lee will visit Union Pines for a 5:30 p.m. start on Thursday.

Union Pines d. Terry Sanford 25-13, 25-11, 22-25, 25-20
The Lady Vikings (5-1, 2-0) beat visiting Terry Sanford in a CFVC match Thursday evening. Union Pines will visit Lee County for a 5:30 p.m. start on Tuesday.

Chapel Hill d. Northwood 25-15, 25-13, 25-11
Chapel Hill rolled to a Big Eight win in Pittsboro Thursday evening. The Lady Chargers (1-2, 0-1) will play at Cardinal Gibbons at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Overhills d. Cape Fear 25-17, 25-22, 25-7
Jaylen Smalls led the Lady Jaguars with nine assists, five kills and four blocks as the Jags (5-1, 2-0) won a Mid-South Athletic match at Cape Fear (1-3, 0-1) Thursday. Mandy Fogg added six aces for the Lady Jaguars. Overhills will host Triton at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Eastern Randolph d. Jordan-Matthews 25-11, 25-11, 25-20
The Lady Jets fell in straight sets at Eastern Randolph (1-3) Thursday. Jordan-Matthews (1-4) will host Eastern Randolph in a quick rematch at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Southern Lee 2, Panther Creek 2
The Cavaliers (3-0-1) scored twice in the last nine minutes of the first half and led 2-1 at halftime but came away with a draw at Panther Creek (0-1-2) Thursday night.
Misa Piedra scored off Ethan Helsman's assist in the 31st minute to make it a 1-1 game. Zack Western scored from Juan Penaloza's assist in the 40th minute to put the Cavs up a goal.
The Cavaliers host Richmond County at 7 p.m. tonight.

Northwood 3, Jordan-Matthews 1
Northwood (3-1) won its third straight match, topping the visiting Jets (2-2) Thursday night.
Israel Carreno scored in the 25th minute and Northwood led 1-0 at halftime. Cameron Bright, in the 56th minute, and Kavasia Hatch, in the 59th minute, took the Charger lead to 3-0.
Northwood will host Chapel Hill for a conference match on Sept. 9. The Jets will host Eastern Randolph at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Middle Creek 2, Harnett Central 1
The Mustangs (3-1) edged the visiting Trojans (2-2) Thursday night. Harnett Central will play at Western Harnett at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Cape Fear 2, Triton 1
The Colts (1-2) edged Triton (1-3-1) in Erwin Thursday night. Christian Canales scored the Hawk goal. Triton will play at Pine Forest at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

O'Neal 2, Trinity of Durham and Chapel Hill 1
The Falcons (2-3-1) made it back-to-back wins this week topping visiting Trinity (1-3-1) Thursday in Southern Pines. O'Neal will open Cape Fear Independent Conference play at Fayetteville Academy at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Jordan-Matthews 8, Northwood 1
The Lady Jets (3-1, 1-0) made it three straight wins with a county-rivalry win at Northwood Thursday afternoon. Jordan-Matthews will play at East Montgomery at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday. Northwood (1-3, 0-2) will host J.F. Webb at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday. 

Overhills 6, Seventy-First 3
The Lady Jaguars prevailed in a Mid-South Athletic Conference match Thursday. Overhills will host E.E. Smith at 4 p.m. Thursday.

JV Football
Lee County 28, Ben L. Smith 14
The JV Yellow Jackets (1-0) won on their home field to start their season Thursday. Lee County will go to Athens Drive on Thursday for a 6 p.m. kickoff.

Northwood 30, Southern Lee 6
The Chargers (1-0) rolled to a win at Cavalier Stadium Thursday night. Southern Lee (1-1) will host St. Pauls at 6:30 p.m. Thursday. Northwood will host rival Jordan-Matthews at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.

Harnett Central 8, Western Harnett 6
The Trojans (1-0) pulled out a county-rivalry win in Lillington Thursday night. Western Harnett (0-2) will host Overhills at  7 p.m. Thursday. Harnett Central visits Triton Thursday for a 7 p.m. start.

Pinecrest 33, Douglas Byrd 12
The Patriots (2-0) romped past Douglas Byrd Thursday night in Southern Pines. Pinecrest will host Beddingfield at 7 p.m. Thursday.
