Lee, Harnett tied in Cape Fear Cup at Sanford GC

Lee County is tied, 6-6, with Harnett County after the first day of the second Cape Fear Cup golf tournament at Sanford Municipal Golf Course. It's an improvement on how Lee County fared versus Harnett last fall.

If some of Lee County's best golfers want to take the cup from the neighbors, though, they'll have to do better than tie on the last day of the match-play, Ryder Cup-style tournament today.

Eighteen points will be decided starting with six fourball matches teeing off starting at 8 a.m. at Sanford Golf Courses. After those rounds, all 24 players will be paired for 12 singles matches in the afternoon. Lee County must win 9.5 points to prevent Harnett from winning or retaining the cup.

"We hope this turns into a tradition we can keep going," said Sanford Golf Course head PGA professional David Von Canon.

Harnett County hosted last year's inaugural event at Chicora Golf Cup and won, 17-13.

On the Lee County side, nine players on this 12-man team played last year as well. They want to level the score. At the same time, says Von Canon, the fun, unique format has drawn players from both counties back.

"We had a dinner for the guys last night," he said, "the guys were talking golf. It was good, competitive, friendly fellowship. It's a sociable weekend. I think it's what golf is all about, plus we have a lot of good players coming together to compete."

Lee and Harnett took three matches apiece in Saturday's two rounds, one set of six fourball matches and one set of six foursome, or alternate shot, matches.

For Harnett County, two teams, Paul Howell and Bo Crooks, and Tony Parrish with Kenny Stewart, went 4-for-4.

Von Canon, the Lee County captain, mixed his pairings more but kept his anchor spot the same, with Carson Lanier and Matthew Rhodes. Lanier and Rhodes defeated Braxton Wynns and Stephen Morris 2-and-1 in fourball, then beat the same Harnett duo 5-and-4 in foursome.

The 12 singles matches should begin around 12:30 p.m. today. Spectators are welcome to turn out and there is no admission cost.
