Southern Lee 54, Overhills 51

The Cavaliers (12-9, 9-2) won their regular-season home finale with their second straight victory which went down to the wire Tuesday night at Cavalier Court.

Freshman guard Noah Mellette made a three-pointer to put the Cavs into the lead and a free throw by Christian Locust made for the final margin.

The win over the Jaguars (14-7, 8-3), who the Cavaliers edged 65-61 at Overhills on Jan. 18, came after Justin McKinnon’s basket at the buzzer gave Southern Lee a 55-53 win at Douglas Byrd last Friday.

Southern Lee clinches second place in the Cape Fear Valley Conference, and the conference’s No. 2 state tournament seed. Westover, with a win over Western Harnett Tuesday night, clinched the CFVC season title.

Overhills hosts Douglas Byrd tonight at 7:30 p.m. The Cavaliers play at Gray’s Creek tonight at 7:30 p.m.

Girls basketball

Overhills 45, Southern Lee 39

Overhills (16-5, 11-0) clinched sole possession of the CFVC season championship at Southern Lee (11-11, 8-3) Tuesday night.

Sophomore Ge’Naisha Robinson had 16 points, eight rebounds and five steals to lead the Lady Jaguars. Katelyn Clark added 13 points. KeKe Robinson had six points and six boards. Overhills won the third period 12-6 to take a 30-23 cushion to the fourth.

Senior guard Brianna Taylor led the Lady Cavaliers with 17 points, five rebounds and three assists. Jordanna Kalkhof scored 10 points. Makenzie Cicogna had four points and 10 rebounds.

Southern Lee plays at Gray’s Creek tonight at 6 p.m. A Lady Cavalier win would assure them second place in the conference as the Cavs are a game ahead of Union Pines and Westover.

Overhills, with a 10-game winning streak, finishes its regular season hosting Douglas Byrd this evening at 6 p.m.
