Campbell beats Radford 65-63 in Big South showdown
BUIES CREEK (AP) — Reco McCarter scored 17 points, five in a late 7-0 run which allowed Campbell to escape with a 65-63 win over Radford in a showdown for the Big South's North Division lead Wednesday night at Gore Arena.
McCarter made 3 of 5 free throws and a layup as the Camels took a 65-62 lead with 9 seconds left. The Highlanders made a free throw, missed the second and grabbed an offensive rebound with 5 seconds left giving them one last chance. After a timeout, R.J. Price missed a 3-pointer with a second left.
Kyre' Hamer scored 16 points, Darius Leonard had 14 points and Leek Leek added 10 points for Campbell (10-10, 4-1). The Camels made 5 of 18 three-pointers on the night with Leonard making 2 of 3.
McCarter and Leonard grabbed seven rebounds each to lead the Camels. While shooting 27.8 percent beyond the three-point line, the Camels shot 45.3 percent (24 of 53) overall from the field.
Radford (13-7, 3-2), which was denied the 600th win in program history, led 39-30 at half and pushed it to 13 early in the second half. The Camels clawed back to grab a lead with 7:26 to go.
Price led Highlanders with 12.
The Camels have won four of their last five games. Campbell will travel to face Gardner-Webb at 7 p.m. Saturday.
UNC Asheville 81, Winthrop 66
ASHEVILLE (AP) — Jaron Lane scored 22 points and grabbed four rebounds as UNC Asheville rolled over Winthrop 81-66 on Wednesday night.
Andrew Rowsey had 17 points and five assists for the Bulldogs (10-9, 4-1 Big South). Sam Hughes added 12 points and seven rebounds and David Robertson chipped in with 11 points and six rebounds. The Bulldogs outrebounded Winthrop 47-29.
UNC Asheville went 19-6 to start the game and led 47-28 at the break.
In the second half, the Eagles came within nine points in the final minutes but could not close the gap. A layup by Lane with 1:52 left to play and 7 of 10 from the line closed out the scoring for the Bulldogs.
Leading the Eagles (9-8, 3-2) was Andre Smith with 12 points and five rebounds. Winthrop hit 39.7 percent from the field overall and just 42.1 percent from the line.
VMI 82, High Point 80 - OT
LEXINGTON, Va. (AP) — Rodney Glasgow followed his own miss with a left-handed putback with .6 seconds left in overtime and VMI pulled out an 82-80 victory over High Point on Wednesday night.
John Brown made two free throws for High Point (6-12, 2-3 Big South) with 1:38 left in overtime to take an 80-78 lead and got the ball back after a turnover. But the Keydets' D.J. Covington intercepted a pass and, after teammate QJ Peterson missed a 3-pointer, slammed home the rebound with 47 seconds left. VMI (10-8, 3-2) got the ball back on a travel, setting up Glasgow's winning shot.
Covington's two free throws with 9 seconds left in regulation sent the game into overtime at 75-all.
Peterson led VMI with 25 points. Glasgow scored 18, Jordan Weethee 11 and Covington 10.
Brown led the Panthers with 28 points with Adam Weary adding 17, Jorge Perez-Laham 16 and Devante Wallace 11.
