Area scores: Cavaliers get walk-off win vs. Union Pines
Southern Lee 4, Union Pines 3
Ryan Holmes hit an RBI single with one out in the Cavalier seventh giving Southern Lee a walk-off win over the Vikings Monday night.
Union Pines (12-9, 7-4) fought back from a 3-1 deficit with a run in the sixth and a run in the seventh before the Cavaliers (16-6, 8-2) won in the home half. The Cavs and Vikes split their CFVC meetings for the regular season. The Cavaliers are 2-1 in the series overall.
Christian Wenger (5-3) pitched a complete game for the victory. He allowed six walks but struck out 10.
Aaron Kennedy pitched a complete game for the Vikings, allowing one earned run and striking out four. Union Pines committed five errors.
Holmes went 2 for 3 with a run and two RBI. Conner Showalter went 3 for 3 with a run. Maxx Taylor had a double and a run. Ethan Helsman also scored a run.
For the Vikings, Mason Collins went 2 for 3 with an RBI and Emmitt Carden went 2 for 3.
Southern Lee's game at Terry Sanford Tuesday night and Union Pines at Gray's Creek Tuesday night were both postponed.
Union Pines is slated to visit Southwestern Randolph for a 7 p.m. start tonight.
Southern Lee will host Lee County at 7 p.m. Thursday. The Cavaliers won round one of the county rivalry 7-0.
Game 1 - Chatham Central 8, South Davidson 0
Chatham Central senior Chase Fuquay fired a one-hitter with 18 strikeouts and no walks as the Bears rolled to a win in the first game of a doubleheader on Monday.
Brandon Beal went 3 for 4 with two doubles and four RBI for the Bears. Zack Burke went 3 for 4 with four runs and Michael Smith scored twice.
Game 2 - Chatham Central 4, South Davidson 0
Bear senior Zack Burke throw a no-hitter as Chatham Central (9-8, 6-5) won a Yadkin Valley doubleheader at South Davidson Monday.
Burke (5-2) struck out 12 and allowed four walks. The Bears played errorless defense on the night.
Luke Garner and Camen Mitchell had a double and a run each for the Bears. Burke, Adam Teague, Thomas Brewer and Chase Fuquay drove in a run each.
The Bears have won five of their last six games.
Chatham Central will play at North Moore at 7 p.m. Friday.
Triton 9, Western Harnett 6 - 8 innings
Western Harnett rallied with four runs in the bottom of the sixth for a 6-6 tie Monday evening, but the Hawks (14-4, 8-1) prevailed with three runs in the eighth for a regular-season sweep versus the Eagles (7-13, 3-6).
Brett McLamb led the Hawks going 3 for 5 with a homer, two doubles and four RBI. Tyler Vaughn went 2 for 5 with a double, two runs and three RBI.
Western Harnett will play its regular-season finale at Cleveland at 7 p.m. Friday.
Triton leads South Johnston by a game and a half atop the Two Rivers standings. The Hawks would clinch the conference title with one South Johnston (6-2 Two Rivers) loss or a Hawk win versus visiting Corinth Holders at 7 p.m. Thursday.
Orange 7, Northwood 1
Orange (16-3, 10-0) took a 4-1 lead with four runs in the bottom of the third and kept the Chargers (7-10, 5-5) quiet from there in a Big Eight game Monday.
Northwood was slated to host Northern Vance last night and is set to play at Graham at 6:30 p.m. this evening.
North Moore 11, North Stanly 0
The Mustangs (13-8, 9-3) routed North Stanly in five innings Monday night.
Drake Matthews pitched a three-hit shutout while going 2 for 2 with two runs and two RBI.
Caleb Morrison had a double, a triple, two runs and three RBI. Josh Wallace went 2 for 2 with a triple and two RBI. Kirby Lambert went 2 for 3 with three runs and an RBI. North Moore led 7-0 through two innings.
North Moore played at West Montgomery last night and will host Chatham Central at 7 p.m. Friday.
Richmond 6, Pinecrest 5
Richmond (14-6, 7-2) scored the go-ahead run with two outs in the home half of the sixth to gain a half-game lead atop the Southeastern Conference Monday night.
Pinecrest (17-3, 6-3) will host Hoke County at 7 p.m. Thursday.
Northwood 11, Orange 8
The Lady Chargers (14-1, 9-1) avenged their only loss of the season by outslugging Orange (12-2, 9-1) Monday evening at Orange. The Lady Chargers and Lady Panthers are tied for first in the Big Eight.
Northwood trailed 6-3 through four frames before scoring three runs in the fifth and five more in the sixth for an 11-6 lead.
Anna Jasper went 2 for 4 with a double, a home run and three RBI. She pitched a complete game.
Carson Shaner had two runs and two RBI while Payton Springle and McKenzie Allgood scored two runs each.
Northwood hosts J.F. Webb for a league game at 6 p.m. this evening.
Triton 11, Western Harnett 7
Triton (13-6, 6-3) completed a regular-season sweep over the Lady Eagles (5-12, 3-6) Monday night in Lillington.
Western Harnett cut a 4-0 Triton lead down to a run in the fifth before Triton answered with seven runs in the top of the sixth.
Kasey Matthews led the Lady Hawks going 4 for 5 at the plate with two runs. Emma Thomas went 3 for 5 with four RBI. Savannah Dunn had two runs and two RBI.
Triton will host Corinth Holders at 7 p.m. Thursday. Western Harnett will play at Cleveland at 7 p.m. Friday.
North Moore 9, West Montgomery 1
North Moore (14-3, 11-1) romped to a win at West Montgomery (12-5, 12-2) in a key Yadkin Valley game Monday. The Lady Mustangs were slated to host West Montgomery yesterday. North Moore will play at Chatham Central at 6 p.m. Friday.
Richmond 4, Pinecrest 1
The Lady Raiders (21-0, 9-0) completed a regular-season sweep of Pinecrest (11-5, 5-4) Monday night. The Lady Patriots will host Hoke County at 7 p.m. Thursday.
Jordan-Matthews 15, Carrboro 0
The Lady Jets (12-4, 7-0) routed visiting Carrboro in a Mid-State game Monday. Jordan-Matthews has won eight of its last nine games. The Lady Jets hosted Bartlett Yancey last night and will play a doubleheader at Cummings at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
South Davidson 2, Chatham Central 0
South Davidson (7-9, 5-9) got a season split with the Lady Bears (8-8, 5-7) in Bear Creek Monday evening. Chatham Central plays at Lee County at 6:30 p.m. this evening.
Harnett Central 14, Knightdale 3
Harnett Central (8-6, 6-3) claimed a regular-season sweep of Knightdale on the road Monday evening. The Lady Trojans scored four runs in the third to move out to a 6-0 lead.
Jessie Mangum had two runs and two RBI. Madalyn Hamilton went 2 for 3 with a double and two RBI. Alex Raynor and Anna Bain added two RBI each.
The Lady Trojans played Garner last night and will travel to play Rolesville at 4 p.m. Friday.
Uwharrie Charter 2, Chatham Charter 0
Uwharrie Charter (5-3-1) beat the visiting Lady Knights (1-9-1) Monday afternoon in Asheboro. Chatham Charter hosts Research Triangle at 4:30 p.m. today.
Terry Sanford 6, Southern Lee 4
Terry Sanford won the second half 4-3 to win a Cape Fear Valley shootout in Fayetteville Monday night. The Lady Bulldogs (12-3, 10-1) take a half-game lead atop the league over Union Pines.
Freshman Emma Langston scored two goals for the Lady Cavs. Yusimar Arista and Laurynn Ansted scored a goal apiece.
The Lady Cavaliers (9-5, 7-4) are third in the CFVC standings with one match to play. Southern Lee hosts Lee County at 7 p.m. tonight. The Lady Cavs won 6-0 at Lee County in March.
North Moore 5, North Stanly 1
The Lady Mustangs (4-4-2, 4-4-1) rolled to a Yadkin Valley Conference win at North Stanly Monday. North Moore hosts Queen's Grant for a YVC match at 6 p.m. today.
Pinecrest 9, Richmond 0
The Lady Patriots (10-6-1, 7-2-0) routed Richmond (4-11-1, 2-7-0) in a Southeastern Conference match Monday night. Pinecrest will host Hoke County at 7 p.m. Friday.
Carrboro 9, Jordan-Matthews 0
The Lady Jaguars blanked Jordan-Matthews in a Mid-State match in Carrboro Monday. Jordan-Matthews (5-9-1, 3-5-0) hosts Bartlett Yancey at 6 p.m. this evening.
Triton 8, Corinth Holders 1
A match after scoring seven goals in a Lady Hawk win versus Smithfield-Selma, sophomore Morgan Goff scored six goals as Triton (11-4-1, 6-2-0) blitzed Corinth Holders (8-4, 5-3) in a Two Rivers match Monday.
Dahlia Guin had three assists while Emily Neville had a goal and two assists and Demarshay Devane had a goal and an assist.
Triton played at Western Harnett last night and will host Corinth Holders at 7 p.m. Thursday.
Garner 2, Harnett Central 0
Garner (9-5-1, 9-1-1) got its second 2-0 win of the season versus Harnett Central (5-9-2, 3-6-2) Monday evening in Angier.
Harnett Central plays at Rolesville at 6 p.m. this evening.
Northwood 10, Orange 8
Charger junior Tyler Romel scored six goals leading Northwood (8-6) to a conference victory Monday evening in Pittsboro.
Jacob Bass scored two goals and Jacob Orbich and Sean O'Donnel added a goal each for the Chargers. Rob Hamlet gathered a team-high 11 ground balls. Sophomore keeper Eric Franklin made 12 saves.
Northwood won the third quarter 4-2 to take a 7-5 lead.
Pinecrest 11, Fuquay-Varina 3
The Patriots (2-12) won at Fuquay-Varina behind five goals and two assists by junior attack Zach Fradenburgh.
Nic Guyon had two goals and two assists for the Patriots. Keegan Good scored two goals. Thomas Dean and Patrick Guarente had a goal each. Keeper Ross Weiss made seven saves.
Pinecrest will host Cary at 6 p.m. Friday.
