Area scores: Crusaders make it 20 straight heading into states

Boys soccer

Grace Christian 3, Wake Christian 1

The Crusaders (24-2-1) won their 20th straight match with two goals by Salvador Leonidez leading the way over visiting Wake Christian Tuesday afternoon. Grace Christian and Wake Christian played a scoreless draw on Aug. 15.

Sergio Charco had a goal and two assists for the Crusaders. Leonidez assisted on Charco's goal.

The Crusaders will, almost assuredly, have a first-round bye and host a quarterfinal match on Tuesday afternoon in the NCISAA 1A State Tournament.

Northern Guilford (11-2) edged the Lady Vikings (14-3) by a match in the first round of the NCHSAA 3A Dual Team State Tournament in Cameron on Tuesday. The Lady Vikings will have six players, Mary Beth Jackson and Julianne Hall in singles, and the teams of Kailee Southworth/Celine Bullock and Megan Smith/Abbey Downing in doubles, play in the Mid East Regional Tournament in Burlington Friday and Saturday.

Triton 6, Western Guilford 3

Triton (13-0), the champion of the Two Rivers Conference, beat visiting Western Guilford (11-7) in the first round of the 3A Dual Team Tournament Tuesday. The Lady Hawks will host Big East Conference champ Rocky Mount (17-2) in the second round at 4 p.m. Tuesday.

Jordan-Matthews 6, Washington 0

The Lady Jets (12-5), No. 2 from the Mid-State, swept the singles matches at Eastern Plains Conference champion Washington (12-2) to advance through the opening round of the NCHSAA 2A Dual Team State Tournament Tuesday.

Jordan-Matthews will play at Greene Central (19-4), champion of the Eastern Carolina Conference, at 4 p.m. Tuesday.


Gray Stone Day 6, Chatham Central 0

Gray Stone Day (17-3) beat Chatham Central (15-3) for the second time this season in the first round of the 1A Dual Team State Tournament in Misenheimer on Tuesday.


Garner 5, Pinecrest 2

Garner (16-3) advanced through the first round of the 4A Dual Team State Tournament at Southeastern Conference champion Pinecrest (11-3) on Tuesday.


Volleyball

Union Pines d. Terry Sanford 17-25, 25-18, 25-22, 25-6

Union Pines (16-6), the third seed in the Cape Fear Valley Conference Tournament, defeated No. 2 Terry Sanford in the semifinals at Lee County Tuesday night. The Lady Vikings met Lee County in the final last night.

The Lady Vikings tallied 24 total blocks, led by Stephanie Johnson getting nine blocks along with four kills. Chandler Adams had 16 digs. Megan Harris had 18 assists and six aces. Alex Prots scored six kills.

Union Pines and Terry Sanford (11-10) have qualified for the NCHSAA State Tournament.

Jack Britt 3, Overhills 0

No. 2-seeded Jack Britt (18-3) swept No. 3 Overhills (12-11) in the semifinals of the Mid-South Athletic Conference Tournament Tuesday night. The Lady Jaguars will be in the NCHSAA 4A State Tournament.

Pinecrest d. Purnell Swett 23-25, 25-16, 25-14, 25-18

The No. 2 Lady Patriots (15-10) rebounded after the first set to advance past No. 3 Purnell Swett (13-4) and into the Southeastern Conference Tournament final at top-seeded Scotland. Scotland beat Richmond 25-17, 26-24, 25-23 in Tuesday's semifinals.
