Camels host Mercer for homecoming
Two of the top rushing offenses in FCS football will meet Saturday at Barker-Lane Stadium as Campbell hosts Pioneer Football League newcomer Mercer at 4 p.m. The game will be part of Campbell’s 2013 Homecoming festivities.
The Camels (1-6, 0-4) and Bears (6-1, 2-1) are two of the top rushing teams in all of FCS, with Mercer averaging 273.4 yards per game and Campbell at 271.7 yards per game.
Senior quarterback Brian Hudson, who rushed for 110 yards and three touchdowns while passing for 227 and another score in Campbell's 52-45 loss to Jacksonville last Saturday, leads CU with 85.9 rushing and 141.0 passing yards per game. Kurt Odom and Keith Goss add 56.0 and 47.0 rushing yards per game for the Camels.
Odom heads into Saturday’s game tied for the program’s all-time lead in touchdowns scored with 17, knotted with running back Carl Smith (2008-11). The senior from Robbinsville is third on the program’s career rushing charts with 1,289 yards.
Matt Farris has posted 55 tackles with an interception and a forced fumble, while Isaac Scott owns 27 tackles, two sacks and two forced fumbles. Brandon Mobley has notched two interceptions and 20 stops.
Mercer, a first-year football program, is traveling away from Macon, Ga. for just the second time this season. The Bears defeated Carnegie Mellon 54-21 last weekend.
The Bears score 39.6 points per game, led by redshirt freshman running back Payton Usher’s 101.0 yards rushing per game. John Russ tallies 166.9 passing yards per game with 13 touchdowns, tacking on 47.4 rushing yards a game with six touchdowns.
The Camels have four games following their homecoming showdown with Mercer. Single game tickets remain for Campbell’s home finale against Marist on Nov. 9. Campbell travels to Stetson on Nov. 2, and closes with trips to Old Dominion (Nov. 16) and Davidson (Nov. 23).
