Western Harnett's Brown earns All-American spot
Mateius Brown, a rising senior at Western Harnett High School, finished eighth and earned All-American honors in the discus at the USA Track and Field National Junior Olympic Championships last week at North Carolina A&T University.
In the boys 17-18 year-old discus on Wednesday, Brown made his best throw of the competition, measuring 162-feet-0, in the third and final round of the preliminary heat to qualify for the final round - the top eight of 54 athletes. Brown finished eighth and the top eight made the USATF's All-American team.
Brandon Lombardino, with DuPage Track Club from Illinois, won the discus gold medal with a throw of 182-2.
Brown, competing during the summer for Sandhills Track Club, won the NCHSAA 3A discus state championship and finished state runner-up in the shot put in May.
Chelan Stanford, 12, of Sanford, competed in the high jump in her first-ever USATF National Junior Olympic Championships on Sunday. She finished tied for 14th in the 11-12 age group with a best jump of 4-feet-5. Stanford's also a member of Sandhills Track Club. My'khiyah Williams, from Brooklyn, N.Y., won the gold at 5-feet-1.
