Lady Crusaders get test, and pass, against Lee Christian

Grace Christian's girls soccer team improved to a 7-0 record Friday afternoon. The Lady Crusaders, attested by their head coach Chris Pratt, also got the toughest half they've faced all season thanks to city rival Lee Christian.
The Lady Crusaders (7-0, 3-0) scored three goals in the second half to win 4-1. The Lady Falcons (3-2, 2-2) were the more aggressive and pressing side for the first 40 minutes and a sudden goal with less than a second to go before halftime, with forward Corrine Weaver chasing down a loose ball in the Lady Crusader penalty box and tapping it hard enough to get by the Lady Crusader keeper and into the net, gave the Lady Falcons a deserved 1-1 score at half.
"(Lee Christian's) effort was better than our effort," Pratt said. "I had to challenge our girls. Will you step up? This was the biggest challenge we'd faced at halftime this season."
The Lady Falcons had two good scoring chances on goal in the opening minutes.
Grace Christian struck quickly, out of a play which didn't look like much until forward Torie Boyte controlled a deflected ball off a Falcon defender and cracked a 20-yard strike from just past the top of the box into the goal for a 1-0 Lady Crusader lead in the ninth minute.
Unlike most Grace Christian wins, as the Lady Crusader have notched three 9-0 wins in the last two weeks, the chances were few and far between until after the halftime pep talk.
In the second half, most of the action, if still not many clear, open scoring chances, was in and around the Lee Christian penalty box.
In the 46th minute, Boyte scored her second goal, making two cuts with the ball at her feet before a drive from the top of the box into the upper part of the net.
In the 55th minute, Bridgette Angeles scored off a corner kick put into the box by Madison Bolen. In the 76th minute, a shot by Angeles led to a handball and penalty kick. Bolen converted the penalty kick making it 4-1 Grace Christian.
"We have no seniors," said Duran Johnson, Lee Christian's first-year head coach, "so we're getting better all the time. We're a young team, but we're clearly improving."
The Lady Falcons won two Carolina Christian matches earlier this week, 8-1 versus Cresset Christian and 5-1 versus Trinity Academy.

On the baseball diamond at Lee Christian Friday afternoon, the visiting Crusaders scored seven runs in each of the first two innings and went on to win in five innings.
The Falcons were an out away from getting out of the top of the first with no score. With two on and two out, Shane Farnsworth sent a fly to deep right which fell and went for a triple.
It was only the start of a huge two-out rally with a combination of Crusader hitting and Falcon miscues on fly balls which could've stopped the damage. Paul Bordelon had an RBI triple and leadoff man Caleb Welborn, already with a double in the inning, hit a two-run single his second time up.
The Crusaders (5-5, 2-0) sent 13 men to the plate in the second inning on the way to a 14-0 lead.
Grace Christian will host Neuse Christian, for a CCC game, at 5 p.m. Tuesday. Lee Christian continues its CCC schedule Thursday at 6 p.m. at Wayne Christian.
