JV Lady Falcons split doubleheader to start season
Lee Christian’s JV softball squad got its season underway by splitting a doubleheader with Village Christian of Fayetteville on Saturday.
Lee Christian 12, Village Christian 2
The Lady Falcons (1-1, 0-0) won the opening game in three innings over the Lady Knights.
Village Christian led 2-0 through one inning and had a chance to extend its lead in the second. After the first Lady Knight batter walked, the Lady Falcons got two pop outs and a strikeout.
The Lady Falcons blew the game open in the third inning, sending 18 batters to the plate and scoring 12 runs. Maeanna Haywood led off the inning with a walk followed by singles by Virginia Gladden and Carlee Whitt. Hanna Lee reached on an error by the first baseman. Sammie Jo West was walked followed by a single by Emma McNeil and Kaitlin Damon reached on an error by the second baseman. The Lady Falcons kept the line moving with five consecutive walks. Haywood, Gladden, and Whitt each scored twice in the inning. Whitt and McNeil had two RBI each.
West pitched all three innings giving up only one hit and two unearned runs. Haywood reached base all three times at bat.

Village Christian 14, Lee Christian 6
In game two, the Lady Knights hit the ball much better. The Lady Knights opened the scoring with four runs in the top of the first on four singles and two walks by the first six batters. The Lady Falcons scored in the bottom of the first on a single by Carlee Whitt that scored Chloe Smith who reached on a walk.
The Lady Knights added three more runs in the top of the second when runners reached base on a walk and two throwing errors by the Lady Falcons. The Lady Falcons added another run after Hanna Lee reached base on a bunt and stole two bases before scoring on a double by Maeanna Haywood.
The Lady Knights added two more runs in the top of the third when Aubrey Griffin hit a home run with one on making it 9-2. Carlee Whitt scored on a triple by Hanna Welch in the bottom of the third and later scored stealing home on a passed ball.
The Lady Knights added two more unearned runs in the fourth. The Lady Falcons scored two more in the bottom of the fourth when Lee singled and Haywood was hit by a pitch. Whitt got her second RBI of the game when she hit into a fielder’s choice scoring Lee. Sammie Jo West drove in Haywood for the final run for the Lady Falcons on a single up the middle.
The Lady Knights added two more in the top of the fifth to make the final score 14-6. Virginia Gladden pitched three innings giving up eight hits and four earned runs.
The Lady Falcons’ next game is home on Tuesday. The varsity Lady Falcons (1-0, 1-0) will face non-conference opponent Chatham Charter at 4 p.m. at Optimist Park.
