Falcons fall in home hoops opener
Berean Baptist pulled away in the second half to win 51-32 and spoil Lee Christian's first home basketball game of the season Tuesday night.
The host Falcons trailed 27-22 at halftime before the Bulldogs, from Fayetteville, turned to a pressure defense and won the third quarter 16-2. Berean forced nine Falcon turnovers in the period.
Jack Burrus led the Falcons and all scorers with 18 points, including 15 points in the first half. Graham Terrell added 10 points for Lee Christian.
"We just committed too many turnovers tonight,” said Lee Christian head coach Steven Lane. “We are a very young team and I know these guys will improve as the season progresses.”
The Falcons (0-1) played well in the first half to stay with the Bulldogs, Lane said.
The JV Falcons won their season opener, topping Berean Baptist 25-17.
The Falcons started well in the first half by crashing the boards and led by the inside play of Garrett Gardner and Noah Thomas, coach Lane said, and Lee Christian led 16-11 at halftime.
Lee Christian held onto an 18-15 edge going to the fourth quarter. The Falcons turned up their defensive effort and Graham Terrell's four-point play, as he made a three-pointer and was fouled, put the game out of reach.
Terrell led the Falcons with 11 points and five rebounds. Gardner had 10 rebounds and went 7-for-9 at the free throw line. Thomas had seven points and eight boards. Garrison Weaver had four points and seven steals.
The Falcons will begin Carolina Christian Conference play by hosting Northwood Temple on Nov. 22.
The Lady Falcon varsity and JV teams begin their seasons today and Friday. Lee Christian will host a varsity game against River Mill Academy at 6 p.m. this evening. The JV Lady Falcons will host the Chatham Thunder at 6 p.m. Friday.
