Falcons playing Hoops for Hope on Friday
Lee Christian will play its Third Annual Hoops for Hope Night Friday night with four games helping raise funds and recognition to fight cancer.
The night has become a Falcon tradition in its short span. The Lee Christian Athletic Department and Lee Christian Booster Club combines with the Lee Christian Relay Team at the annual Lee County Relay for Life event each May to raise money.
"We started with just a simple idea to devote one night’s profits to cancer research and it has evolved into a relay team which has raised over $6,000 for research in just two years”, said Lee Christian Booster Club president Steven Lane.
On the court, the Falcons will host Wayne Christian for a middle-school basketball doubleheader beginning at 3:30 p.m. The JV Lady Falcons will play the Chatham Thunder at 6 p.m. The varsity boys game, the Falcons vs. Wayne Christian, is set for 7:30 p.m.
“We are very proud of those who come out to help with and support this event”, said Lee Christian athletic director Bruce O’Quinn.
“We would also like to thank our friends from Wayne Christian who allow us to sponsor this event in conjunction with their scheduled games here each year," O'Quinn said.
“This has become a special event to help raise money and awareness and I am just so proud of those who come out to support this event," said Jeanne West, organizer and Lee Christian Relay Team leader.
Along with the basketball action, special events Friday evening will include selling luminaries "in honor of" or "in memory of" those who have battled cancer. There will be t-shirts for sale, a silent auction and a survivor's recognition ceremony before the varsity boys game.
"It's amazing what this event has turned into," Lane said. "It has generated a lot of school spirit among our fans and we hope to pack our gym in pink on Friday night."
