Lady Falcons rally to top Jordan-Matthews
Lee Christian scored two goals in the final eight minutes of the match to defeat Jordan-Matthews, 3-2, Thursday afternoon.
Lady Falcon senior Whitney O'Quinn scored two goals, including the go-ahead strike in the 74th minute. O'Quinn has committed to play soccer and basketball at William Peace University in Raleigh starting in the fall.
The visiting Lady Jets (8-5-2, 6-2-1 Mid-State) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first half. Lee Christian (6-7, 5-3 Carolina Christian) got one goal back before halftime with O'Quinn converting a penalty kick in the 36th minute.
The Lady Jets held the lead until the 73rd minute when Makaila Gillum scored, off an assist by O'Quinn, to tie the match. O'Quinn made it 3-2 Lady Falcons a minute later.
O'Quinn was coming off a five-goal match. She has 32 goals this season and 73 for her Lady Falcon career, which is a school record, for girls and boys soccer. The previous record was 69 goals.
"Whitney will do very well playing at the next level," said Lee Christian head coach Eric Davidson, "and I look forward to cheering for her in the fall.
"But we aren't done with high school soccer yet, and I look forward to seeing how far this team can go in our conference tournament, and possibly the state tournament. It's already been a great year for Lee Christian women's soccer," Davidson said.
In their first season in the CCC, the Lady Falcons are the No. 4 seed going into the conference tournament next week. Lee Christian will host No. 5 Wayne Christian in a quarterfinal match on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
