Lee County’s win over Western Harnett Thursday night, the second in a week for the Lady Yellow Jackets over Western Harnett, wasn’t pretty. The Lady Jackets (2-1, 0-1) held onto a slim lead throughout the second half for a 35-28 win over the Lady Eagles (0-8).

Lee County head coach Ike Godfrey believes, no matter how it looked or how his squad pulled out the victory, it is a valuable one for his team.

For starters, two wins took Lee County most of the regular season to get to last season. The Lady Jackets have that mark in three games this go-around.

“This is the first time this group of seniors has been 2-1, so it’s a big milestone for us,” Godfrey said.

“We’ve got a lot to work on, but this gives us incentive to keep working hard,” he said.

Each squad made one field goal and one free throw for a 3-3 opening quarter. Both sides had two players foul out on the night. Most of contest was a physical, choppy style. Western Harnett went on to total 34 turnovers while most of Lee County’s struggles were with poor shooting.

The Lady Jackets turned some defense into offense in the second period. Sarah VanSteen and Meredith Love got steals and fast-break lay-ups for four straight Jacket points and an 11-4 lead. Lee County held a 13-10 edge at halftime.

Western Harnett’s Geena and Erin Bryant combined for 19 rebounds in the half, many of them offensive boards, but their tough play didn’t result in baskets.

De’ja Bland scored the first three points of the second half, followed by Ally Davis hitting a three-pointer for a 19-10 Lee County lead.

The Lady Eagles closed the gap. From a 23-16 Jacket lead entering the last quarter, Geena Bryant scored in the lane and Imani Oliver stole a rebound away from a Jacket and scored from the lane making it 23-20.

Lee County answered with Bland making a jumper on a move along the baseline. Allie Eyers scored the next four Jacket points, two at the line, then two on a 17-foot jumper from a wing, for a 29-21 Lee County lead.

Eyers, Bland, VanSteen and Davis scored six points each. Olivia Sturdivant had four points, 13 rebounds and six steals. Davis had 10 rebounds.

For the Lady Eagles, Geena Bryant had 10 points, 17 rebounds and six blocks. Erin Bryant had 17 rebounds as well while Oliver had nine points and nine boards.

Lee County played Fuquay-Varina in a Tri-9 game Friday night. The Lady Yellow Jackets will host Middle Creek in a conference game Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Western Harnett will host Harnett Central Monday at 6:30 p.m., then Southern Lee Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
