Godfrey scores TD in San Jose win
Former Lee County star Dennis Godfrey scored the first touchdown of his San Jose SaberCat career as San Jose defeated visiting Chicago 65-40 in Arena Football League action Saturday.
San Jose (13-5) finished its regular season and, having won five of its last six games, is a wild card in the AFL playoffs. The SaberCats will play West Division champ and defending ArenaBowl champ Arizona (15-3) in Phoenix Sunday at 8 p.m.
With San Jose leading 58-33 in the fourth quarter, the SaberCats recovered a Rush onsides kick attempt. On the third play of the ensuing drive, Godfrey, a 335-pound fullback for San Jose, scored with an 11-yard run.
According to the San Jose web site game report, Godfrey "spun, shed a would-be tackler and with a different player draped all over him, dove into the end zone for his first SaberCats touchdown."
Godfrey finished with five carries for 20 yards, being San Jose's leading rusher on the night.
Godfrey was a defensive lineman/tight end, as well as basketball standout, as a Yellow Jacket. After going to Wake Forest on the defensive side, he became a three-year starter as an offensive lineman. Prior to signing with San Jose in June, Godfrey was a player-coach, and a two-way lineman on the field, for the Saint Ouen l'Aumone Cougars in France's Elite Football Conference for a season.
He was initially signed by San Jose as a offensive lineman before injuries gave him a shot at fullback, where he's played four games. An AFL team's typical offensive lineup is a quarterback, three wide receivers, three linemen and a fullback.
Eight teams are in the AFL playoffs, which end with ArenaBowl XXVI in Orlando on Aug. 17.
