Arizona bounces San Jose from AFL playoffs
The Arizona Rattlers, defending champion of the Arena Football League, defeated the San Jose SaberCats 59-49 Sunday night ending San Jose's season in the first round of the AFL playoffs.
The Rattlers (16-3) scored two quick touchdowns in the fourth quarter to pull away from a 42-42 score through three quarters.
Early in the fourth quarter, San Jose (13-6) drove to near the goal line before fumbling and losing possession. Arizona scored a touchdown on the ensuing drive, taking the lead for good with 9:22 remaining.
On the following kickoff, the Rattler kick bounced off the post of the goalpost and, as a live ball, Arizona recovered it on the SaberCat 7-yard line. Arizona scored another touchdown making it 56-42.
It's the end of San Jose's season, but perhaps not the end of the AFL season for former Lee County and Wake Forest standout Dennis Godfrey.
Godfrey, a fullback/offensive lineman who signed a one-year contract with San Jose in June and played six games this season after being a player/coach for the Saint Ouen l'Aumone Cougars in France's Elite Football Conference through the winter and spring, is a nominee for the 2013 Arena Football All-Star Game.
An all-star game in Honolulu, Haw. is set for Nov. 16 and an all-star game is tentatively scheduled for Beijing, China.
Godfrey is one of four guards who could make the National (western) Conference team. Voting is ongoing at allstar.afl-global.com.
