Jackets take two at Douglas Byrd
Both Lee County varsity basketball squads prevailed at Douglas Byrd in Cape Fear Valley games Friday night.
The Yellow Jackets went to 7-0 overall and 2-0 in the CFVC with a 58-49 win.
The Lady Jackets (3-4, 1-1) rolled to a 55-31 victory over the Lady Eagles.
Sophomore Namique Farrow scored 18 points, including all four of Lee County's three-point baskets on the night, and senior center Dewaun McEachin also went for 18 points for the Jackets. Hunter Jackson and Jerry Pullum added 12 and eight points, respectively.
Kendell Hillman led the Eagles (1-8, 0-2) with 21 points.
Lee County trailed 13-12 after a quarter but then led 30-20 at halftime.
In the first varsity game at Douglas Byrd, the Lady Jackets led 8-6 after a quarter before running to a 25-14 halftime advantage.
Sophomore guard Shantel Bennett led the Lady Jackets with 18 points. Bennett made 8 of 12 field goals and 2 of 4 three-pointers. She also had five steals and four assists.
Tara Speelman had 10 points and three steals for the Lady Jackets along with Tashari Wells-Tucker getting seven points and nine rebounds and Noelle Beattie getting four points, 10 rebounds and five steals. Lee County totaled 29 steals.
Both Yellow Jacket teams travel to Carrboro on Tuesday with the Lady Jackets playing at 6:30 p.m. and the boys game set for 8 p.m.
