Jackets rally to get past Union Pines, 73-59
Lee County (8-1, 3-0) outscored visiting Union Pines (4-5, 0-3) 43-22 in the second half to turn around a halftime deficit and take a Cape Fear Valley Conference win, 73-59, over the Vikings Thursday night.
Union Pines ran off the first eight points of the game and a flurry of three-point shooting by Armani McCoy and Tyler Packer to close the first half on a 12-3 run took the Vikings to a 37-30 halftime lead.
After giving a large contingent of traveling Vikings reason to be loud in the first half, Lee County edged ahead in the third quarter and kept going to a double-digit lead in the last couple of minutes.
Dewaun McEachin scored 13 of his 17 points in the first half, keeping Lee County close. The Yellow Jacket center got plenty of help after halftime.
Jerry Pullum scored 11 of his 13 points in the second half and Hunter Jackson scored 10 of his 13.
From the Lee County bench, which saw action early and often in head coach Reggie Peace's attempts to spur his squad in its early struggles, Namique Farrow scored 11 points and Keaun Toler added nine points.
The Vikings hassled the Yellow Jackets into turnovers and hurried possessions out of the gate. Malik Crawford made a lay-up and jumper in the 8-0 Viking start.
The Jackets, in part thanks to its second string, worked back within a 21-17 score at the end of the quarter. McEachin's offense around the hoop led a 9-0 run partway through the second for a 27-25 Lee County lead.
Back-to-back McCoy three-pointers put the Vikings ahead again. Packer, first with a 24-foot three-pointer from the right wing, then with a 27-footer at the horn of the half, made it 37-30 Vikings.
With more Jackets joining the scoring, five points by Jackson and a fast-break drive by Tre'von Watson made up most of a 9-0 run in the third quarter and Watson dishing to McEachin for a lay-up put Lee County ahead 41-39. Jackson's tip-in at the horn of the period made it 47-45 Jackets.
Farrow made two three-pointers in the first three minutes of the fourth as Lee County stretched its lead to 57-49.
The Viking shooting from earlier in the contest cooled off and an eight-point game was the closest the Vikings got in the last couple minutes.
McEachin finished with 17 points and six rebounds for the Jackets. Jackson had five assists and eight boards.
McCoy led Union Pines with 22 points, including four three-pointers.
The Vikings are off until after Christmas and they will be in the Yellow Jacket Holiday Basketball Classic starting Dec. 27.
Lee County has another contest tonight, hosting former conference mate Athens Drive at 8:30 p.m.
