Lady Cavs make it two out of three
Southern Lee and Lee County have met three times so far this ladies basketball season.
Lee County rolled to an 18-point win in its Christmas tournament. Southern Lee won by 29 on its home floor earlier this month. The third meeting was nothing like the first two, but it was good enough for the Lady Cavaliers (11-10, 6-5) to make it back-to-back wins, in the two conference games, with a 32-25 win at Lee County Saturday afternoon.
The Lady Yellow Jackets (6-16, 2-9) led 17-13 at halftime, having held Southern Lee to one made field goal over the last 11 minutes of the half.
Rachel Wilson, who led the Lady Cavs with 12 points, and point guard Jasmine McIver, even though she missed a big stretch of the fourth quarter after getting her fourth foul, led Southern Lee’s second half.
McIver’s fast-break basket on a drive and scoop shot made it 17-17 less than two minutes into the second half.
Despite a patient pace most of the way by both sides, the Lady Cavs ran their way into the lead as McIver hit Wilson in stride with a long bounce pass for a Wilson lay-up, then McIver assisted to Makenzie Cicogna cutting down the lane for short jumper for an 8-0 Lady Cav run and a 21-17 lead.
Lee County, with a basket by Tashari Wells-Tucker and a three-pointer by Shantel Bennett, cut the Southern Lee lead to 23-22 going to the fourth quarter. Erin Pickens hit a three-pointer for the first points in the last period, making it 26-22 with 5:14 left.
On two fouls within a few seconds, McIver went to the bench with four fouls and just under five minutes left.
Forward Briana Holcomb, in her first action of the game, contributed defensively with three rebounds, a blocked shot and a steal.
Bennett’s three-pointer cut the Lady Cavalier lead a possession, 28-25, with 2:42 and counting but Southern Lee kept the lead until McIver reentered the game with 1:44 remaining.
Wilson tossed in a running shot in the middle of the lane with 1:23 left, then off a defensive stop, McIver finished a fast break with a lay-up for a 32-25 lead with 0:39 left.
In the 19-8 Lady Cavalier second half, McIver made two field goals and assisted on five of the other seven Lady Cavalier field goals, finishing with six points and six assists.
Lee County answered a fast start by the Lady Cavaliers, winning the second quarter 12-2. Whitney Love made a three-pointer and a long two-point jumper in the quarter. A reverse three-point play, with Wells-Tucker rebounding a missed Jacket free throw and scoring, made it 15-11 Lee County.
Bennett led the Lady Jackets with nine points and four assists. Wells-Tucker had six points and nine rebounds.
For the Lady Cavaliers, Pickens added nine points and 11 rebounds. Cicogna had four points and seven boards.
Saturday’s matinee at Lee County was a make-up game and both schools have one more rescheduled game left following thanks to the two recent winter storms.
Southern Lee will host Terry Sanford at 6 p.m. Monday while Lee County will host Westover at the same time. The Cape Fear Valley Conference Tournament is slated to start Tuesday with seeds 2-4 hosting first-round games.
