Area scores: Cavs, Vikings win in CFVC baseball first round

Baseball
Southern Lee 5, Westover 3
The No. 2 Cavaliers (18-7) held off No. 7 Westover (0-17) in the first round of the Cape Fear Valley Conference Tournament Monday night at Southern Lee.
Sophomore Josh Taylor pitched a complete game for the Cavs, allowing two hits, one earned run and two walks while striking out eight.
Cullen Boyette drove in three RBI and Noah Terhune went 2 for 3 and scored two runs. The Cavaliers led 5-0 through four innings. Westover scored two runs in the seventh.
Southern Lee played Union Pines in a semifinal game last night. The tournament final is set for 7 p.m. Thursday at Southern Lee.

 

Union Pines 11, Douglas Byrd 2
The No. 3 Vikings (13-10) cruised by No. 6 Douglas Byrd (5-19) in a CFVC first round game in Cameron Monday night.
Avery Siege started and pitched four innings, giving up no hits and two earned runs while getting six strikeouts and the win.
Emmitt Carden went 2 for 2 with two runs and three RBI for the Vikings. Riley Cameron went 3 for 3 with a run and an RBI. Mason Collins went 2 for 3 with a double, two runs and an RBI.

 

East Montgomery 5, Chatham Central 1
The Bears (10-9, 7-6) took a 1-0 lead in the second inning but couldn't manage any more offense versus the host Eagles (15-3) Monday night.
Matt Brooks drove in Brandon Beal for the Bear run. East Montgomery answered with four runs in the third.
The Yadkin Valley Conference East Division Tournament semifinals will be hosted at Chatham Central Wednesday at 4:30 and 7 p.m. The final is set for 7 p.m. Thursday at Chatham Central.

 

Harnett Central 3, Garner 2
Harnett Central (14-4, 11-1) took a regular-season sweep, both in one-run games, versus Garner (12-9, 8-4) Monday night.
Daryl Johnson scored two of the three Harnett Central runs. Logan Ritchie went 3 for 3 and had an RBI. Junior Cole Hart got the win on the mound.
Harnett Central played East Wake last night and will play at West Johnston at 7 p.m. Thursday.

 

Jack Britt 4, Overhills 0
No. 3-seeded Jack Britt beat No. 6 Overhills (2-16) in the first round of the Mid-South Athletic Conference Tournament Monday night.

 

O'Neal 11, Village Christian 9
O'Neal avenged an 18-4 Village Christian win on April 8 with a win at Village Christian Monday afternoon.
The Falcons (3-8, 3-5) completed their regular season with a home game against Flora MacDonald yesterday.

 

Softball
Douglas Byrd 10, Southern Lee 3
No. 4-seeded Douglas Byrd (10-9) advanced past No. 5 Southern Lee (3-16) in the first round of the Cape Fear Valley Conference Tournament Monday in Fayetteville.
The Lady Cavaliers scored twice in the third cutting a Douglas Byrd lead to 3-2 before the Lady Eagles answered with three runs in the bottom of the third.
Douglas Byrd played No. 1 Gray's Creek in a semifinal game last night.

 

Union Pines 14, Terry Sanford 4
No. 3 Union Pines (12-7) rolled against No. 6 Terry Sanford in the first round of the CFVC Tournament Monday night.
The Lady Vikings met Lee County in a semifinal game last night. The tournament final is set for 7 p.m. Thursday at Southern Lee.

 

Northwood 9, Northern Durham 4
Northwood (18-1) trailed 4-1 after three innings before storming back to win at Northern Durham Monday evening.
The Lady Chargers, having won the Big Eight Conference championship in their first year in the league last week, got a win from pitcher Anna Jasper (12-1). Jasper pitched five innings giving up no earned runs and striking out 11.
Payton Springle had a solo home run and a two-RBI double. Alexa Bernard went 2 for 4 and scored two runs. Ally McKee went 2 for 4 with two doubles, a run and an RBI. Mckenzie Allgood knocked in three RBI on two sacrifice flies and a single.

 

Pine Forest 7, Overhills 0
No. 4 Pine Forest (11-7) blanked the No. 5 Lady Jaguars (6-10) in the first round of the Mid-South Athletic Conference Tournament Monday night.

 

Garner 10, Harnett Central 5
Garner (16-2, 11-1) defeated visiting Harnett Central (9-8, 7-6) in a Greater Neuse River game Monday.
Brittany Clark hit a home run while going 3 for 4 with three RBI and Jordan Mangum went 3 for 4 with a run for Harnett Central.
The Lady Trojans played East Wake last night and will play at West Johnston at 7 p.m. Thursday.

 

Cape Fear Christian 20, Community Christian 1
Cape Fear Christian (16-2) romped to a 16-0 lead in the first inning and won the Carolina Christian Conference Tournament final in four innings Monday at Community Christian.
Cara Kinton went 3 for 4 with a double, two runs and five RBI leading the Lady Eagle sluggins. Amberly McLamb went 2 for 3 and scored four runs. Delaney Cumble, Sommer Bowman, Callie Ferrell and Julie Hodges, who was also the winning pitcher, had two RBI apiece.
The Lady Eagles will play next in the NCISAA 1A State Tournament which begins Tuesday.

 

Chatham Charter 1, River Mill 0
The Lady Knights scored a run in the fifth and that was all they needed for a win at home in Siler City Monday afternoon. Chatham Charter plays at Village Christian at 4:30 p.m. today.

 

Boys lacrosse
Holly Springs 9, Pinecrest 5
Holly Springs (8-8) topped the visiting Patriots (3-13) Monday evening.
Nic Guyon and Keegan Good scored two goals each and Thomas Dean had a goal for the Patriots. Patriot keeper Ross Weiss made 14 saves.

 

Girls soccer
Lee County 1, Gray's Creek 0
After losses of 2-0 and 3-0 to Gray's Creek in the regular season, the Lady Yellow Jackets (5-8) won at Gray's Creek to reach the Cape Fear Valley Conference Tournament semifinals.
No. 5 Lee County played No. 1 Terry Sanford last night and No. 2 Union Pines vs. No. 3 Southern Lee was the first semifinal match last night. The final is set for 7 p.m. Thursday at Terry Sanford.

 

Overhills 4, South View 1
No. 5 Overhills (6-10) won at No. 4 South View (4-12-1), for the Lady Jaguars' second win in three matches versus South View on the season, in the first round of the Mid-South Athletic Conference Tournament Monday.
Overhills advanced to play at No. 1 Jack Britt last night in a semifinal. The championship and third-place matches are set for 5 and 7 p.m. Thursday at Jack Britt.

 

South Davidson 1, Chatham Central 0
South Davidson edged the visiting Lady Bears (3-11, 3-7) in a Yadkin Valley match Monday. Chatham Central plays at North Moore at 6 p.m. this evening.

 

West Montgomery 3, North Moore 1
The Lady Warriors (8-5) scored twice in the second half to pull away from a 1-1 halftime tie and beat North Moore (4-5-2, 4-5-1) Monday. The Lady Mustangs host Chatham Central at 6 p.m. this evening.

 

Harnett Central 3, East Wake 0
The Lady Trojans (7-9-2, 5-6-2) blanked visiting East Wake (3-9-1, 2-8-1) in a Greater Neuse River match Monday. Harnett Central plays at West Johnston at 6:30 p.m. this evening.
