Lady Jackets slug way into CFVC final game
Lee County rode an eight-run inning to a big lead over Union Pines Tuesday evening and a spot in this evening's Cape Fear Valley Conference softball tournament championship game.
No. 2 Lee County trounced the No. 3 Lady Vikings 13-3. No. 1 Gray's Creek beat No. 4 Douglas Byrd 22-4 in the late semifinal at Southern Lee Tuesday. The four semifinalists will be the four CFVC representatives for the NCHSAA 3A State Tournament.
The Lady Yellow Jackets (13-3) have a 3-0 mark over Union Pines (12-8) this season but go into this evening's final having lost 15-5 and 7-4 to the season-champ Lady Bears (19-1).
The Lady Jackets held a 2-1 edge before breaking the game open with eight runs in the bottom of the third.
Senior and Campbell softball signee Chandler Patterson powered Lee County with a 3 for 4 game at the plate with a double, a triple, two runs and two RBI.
Whitney Sanford, along with a complete game pitching, went 3 for 3 with a double and an RBI. Sanford allowed four Lady Viking hits and struck out eight.
Caroline Wilson had a double and three RBI. Kayla Hunt, Savannah Patterson and Tessa Wilson added two RBI each. The Lady Jackets notched 18 hits in all.
Lee County and Gray's Creek play in the final at 6 p.m. this evening at Southern Lee.
