Hunter's 35 takes Athens Drive by Lady Jackets
Grace Hunter scored 35 points to lead Athens Drive (1-0) to a 60-38 home win over Lee County (1-1) in girls’ basketball Friday night.
Hunter scored 24 of the Jaguars’ 30 points in the second half, including 12 of the team’s 14 points in the third quarter. Hunter made all six of her third quarter shots and got an assist on the only basket she didn’t score in the quarter. She made four of her five shots in the fourth quarter and shot 14-of-23 for the game.
Athens Drive’s defense harassed Lee County into 16 first-half turnovers and 24 for the game. Lee County shot 32 percent (12 of 38) on the night.
Ouitta Wilson led Lee County with 13 points on 5-of-16 shooting. Jasmine Person scored eight points on 3-of-4 shooting.
The Jaguars jumped out to an 11-1 lead and used an 8-0 run in the second quarter to build a 30-15 halftime lead. Hunter then matched Lee County’s scoring total in the second half. She scored on a variety of moves, including a pair of power moves under the basket, a floater in the lane, and a pull-up jumper.
Hunter also had several steals that started fast breaks for the Jaguars. Four of her second-half baskets were on transition lay-ups, and she also passed to several teammates on fast breaks to earn assists.
Gabby Respess and Danielle Randolph each had six points for Athens Drive.
In game three of four straight away from home starting the season, the Lady Jackets will play Reidsville at Greensboro's Ben L. Smith High School in the Marvin Webster Classic at 2 p.m. Wednesday.
