Cavaliers win 7-0, Lady Jackets win 11-1
Southern Lee took round one of the county baseball rivalry, and the first-ever Cape Fear Valley Conference meeting between the Cavaliers and Lee County, with Christian Wenger's one-hitter leading a 7-0 victory Tuesday night at Lee County.
Wenger, a senior southpaw, allowed five Yellow Jacket base runners on the night and only one Jacket, with one out in the third inning, to reach second base. Wenger was accurate, walking one, and kept the Jackets off balance.
With Wenger's work, the Cavaliers (9-3, 5-1) didn't need much offense. Seven Yellow Jacket errors gave the Cavaliers plenty of help. The Cavs needed only five hits to chalk up their seven runs.
Southern Lee was gifted two unearned runs to take the lead in the second. Maxx Taylor and Conner Showalter started the frame hitting solid singles, Taylor shooting one into right-center field and Showalter lining one into left.
The Jackets got one out on Marcos Collazo's sacrifice bunt and the second out when Alston Scott struck out Cody Ellis.
Turtle Windish's grounder to third resulted in Austin Bullock making a wild throw to first and two runs scoring.
The Lee County (5-6, 4-2) third was the home side's best chance to score, but even there Wenger had to work out of only a minor threat after the Jackets got a one-out walk by Matt Hutchens followed by a single by Spencer Faulk.
Wenger got a strikeout and a fly gloved by Ryan Holmes in left to retire the side.
The big Cavalier inning, with the aid of three Lee County errors, was a four-run fifth.
Cullen Boyette's long fly, falling at the base of the fence in left-center field, was good for an RBI double making it 3-0 Cavs. An error allowed another run, followed by an error giving the Cavs bases loaded and one out.
With the Cavs already receiving four outs to work with in the inning, Collazo came through on a suicide squeeze and got a single out of it to boot. Ellis followed with a two-strike safety squeeze making it 6-0 Cavs.
Scott pitched five innings for the Jackets allowing two earned runs and getting three strikeouts. Bullock pitched the last two innings, giving up no hits and one unearned run, for the Jackets.
Wenger finished with six strikeouts. He goes to a 3-2 record and it's his third complete game of the season.
Lee County will travel to Gray's Creek for a CFVC game at 7 p.m. Thursday.
Southern Lee will host Douglas Byrd in CFVC play at 7 p.m. Friday.
Lee County 11, Southern Lee 1
On Lee County's softball diamond Tuesday evening, the Lady Yellow Jackets (6-2, 5-1) hit double digits in the run column for the fifth straight game and ran their winning streak to five with a five-inning win over the Lady Cavaliers (2-9, 2-4).
Both the Jackets and Cavs came into the evening off of wins, Lee County with a 19-0 rout over Westover Monday and Southern Lee with a 9-5 win versus Terry Sanford back on Friday.
Lee County got on the board in the home half of the second only for Southern Lee to match the run in the third. The Lady Jackets plated four runs in their third and kept the bats going in the fourth and fifth.
Leadoff hitter Caroline Wilson went 2 for 4 with a run and two RBI. Tessa Wilson and Zizi Hammond had two RBI each. Whitney Sanford and Noelle Beattie scored two runs each as all 10 Jackets who saw action got at least a hit or a run. Caroline Wilson, Tessa Wilson, Chandler Patteron, Morgan Pedley and Savannah Patterson each had a double.
Just like the baseball slate, Lee County will play at Gray's Creek Thursday night and Southern Lee will host Douglas Byrd Friday night.
