Yellow Jackets swarm Spartanburg for 55-0 win

Lee County scored on its first possession and never looked back in recording a 55-0 win over Spartanburg Christian Academy on Friday night. Spartanburg Christian introduced football two years ago and was fielding a full varsity squad for the first time.

Lee County scored on eight of its 10 possessions.

The host team fumbled on its first two possessions, and the Yellow Jackets took advantage with two touchdowns.

Spartanburg fumbled the opening kickoff and Lee County recovered at the 30-yard line. Two plays later, Duane Bland scored on a 12-yard run. The extra point failed and Lee County led 6-0 0:35 into the game.

On Spartanburg’s second drive, the Warriors fumbled and the Jackets recovered at the 30. Kentrell French scored from about five yards out, then carried the ball in for the two-point conversion, to make it 14-0 at the 8:55 mark of the first quarter.

The Jackets fumbled the ball away on their third possession, but on the fourth possession Bland got his second touchdown on a 2-yard run and the extra point kick was good for a 21-0 Lee County lead with 10:47 remaining in the half.

Lee County intercepted a Spartanburg pass and, on its fifth possession, Bland threw a 37-yard touchdown strike to Nolan Groce and the extra point kick was good making it 28-0 with 9:34 remaining in the half.

The Jackets scored again on their sixth drive, as Bubba Wilson scored on a 56-yard run. The extra point kick was good to make it 35-0 Lee County with 5:52 to play in the first half.

The Jackets got the ball to open the second half and scored on the first play on a 48-yard run by French. The kick was good for a 42-0 score.

On Lee County’s next possession, Rogers scored the Jackets’ next touchdown on a 10-yard run and the kick was good for a 49-0 score at the 3:14 mark of the third period.

Arnold had a 12-yard touchdown run on the Jackets’ next possession, and the extra point failed, making it 55-0 with approximately four minutes remaining in the game.

The Jackets had 23 carries for 330 yards, while Spartanburg Christian finished with 22 rushes for 15 yards. French led the Lee County rushing with eight carries for 101 yards.

Lee County (1-0) plays at Ben L. Smith next Friday. The Jackets’ first home game will be Sept. 6 against Athens Drive.
