East Lee welcomes former Rocket as head football coach

Jeffrey Cooke, an East Lee Middle School alum who went on to play football at East Carolina University and professionally, is the new head football coach at East Lee according to an announcement from Lee County Schools on Thursday.

Cooke starred at Lee County Senior and earned a full scholarship to East Carolina, where he was a defensive tackle for the Pirates from 1989-94, earning All-South Independent honors as a senior.

Upon graduating from ECU, Cooke played a preseason with the New York Jets before going on to play for the Baltimore Stallions in the Canadian Football League.

In 1996, Cooke became an assistant strength and conditioning coach at East Carolina. During his coaching career, Cooke's worked at Chowan College and Illinois State University.

Cooke was the defensive coordinator at SanLee Middle School last season.
