Sanford Sting holding homecoming all day Saturday

The Sanford Sting Pop Warner football and cheerleading teams have big Saturdays just about every Saturday during the fall. This weekend, the Sting will take the field Friday night, then again all day Saturday, first for Pop Warner Night at the Overhills at Lee County high school game, then for the renewal of Sanford Sting Homecoming on Saturday, also at Lee County High School.

Pop Warner football players, cheerleaders, coaches and team moms will be admitted free to the Overhills vs. Lee County game Friday night. The Sting football and cheer teams will be introduced on the field before the Yellow Jackets clash against the Jaguars. Sting players should meet at the tennis courts behind the home side of the stadium at 6:30 p.m.

The Sting's six football teams will have the gridiron to themselves for six games the next day at Paul B. Gay Stadium.

The Homecoming celebration has taken some seasons off as Pop Warner football grows around the region, it's been more difficult for all the Sting teams to get home games on the same Saturday.

This Saturday though, the games kick off at 10 a.m. with a flag league game and will go until a 4:45 p.m. start for the pee wee league game.

There will be games, halftime contests, a bouncy house, concessions and a silent auction.

After going up against Overhills the previous night, Lee County football players will be volunteering throughout the day helping with activities.

The auction will include items such as football and hockey tickets, a weekend mountain vacation, autographed memorabilia from the Carolina Panthers, North Carolina, Duke and East Carolina and gift certificates to many of the local businesses which sponsor the Sanford Sting. The auction will end at halftime of the last game of the day.
